  February 2014
Welcome to our February 2014 email newsletter
I am delighted to welcome you to the February 2014 newsletter from Baildon Town Council.

I know that many of you enjoy going along to Baildon Farmers' Market and I am delighted to be able to report that the quality of the Market has been recognised nationally by FARMA (National Farmers and Retail Markets Association). Baildon Farmers’ Market has been selected as one of six finalists in the national Farmers' Market of the year competition. Four of the hard-working members of the Farmers' Market Committee will be going to Warwick to represent Baildon later in February, for the award ceremony. You can keep up to date with the Farmers' Market through its website and by subscribing to the Farmers' Market newsletter.

The Farmers' Market is, I think, an excellent example of how a town council can act to facilitate and enable local initiatives. The project began as an idea in several local people's heads with the aim of giving residents access to high-quality, local and fairly-sourced produce. Under the umbrella of the Town Council, a steering group comprising town councillors, Baildon Belles Women's Institute, and community, business and farming representatives, undertook to lead, research, plan, and co-ordinate the setting up of the Market. With the continuing help, hard work, and commitment of a large number of volunteers, the Market is the success that it is today.

Additional bonuses are that the Market strengthens our community (the 'buzz' of people greeting friends and chatting whilst visiting the Market always delights me) and brings visitors to Baildon - not only to enjoy the Market but to spend money in our local cafes and shops. The Farmers' Market and the many other vibrant community activities that so many of you voluntarily contribute to, help to 'put Baildon on the map' as a great place to live and visit.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who volunteers at the Farmers' Market, Baildon at Christmas, the Scarecrow Walk day, and the many other volunteer-led community clubs, groups, and activities across Baildon. You create the bonds that bind us together as a community.

You will find news of some recent and forthcoming community events in this newsletter and on the Baildon Town Council website and a paper newsletter will shortly be available to collect from local public buildings.

Best wishes
Chris Flecknoe Chair of the Council
BUILDING A BETTER BAILDON STREET LINKS SCHEME
Following on from the Active Citizens’ Conference which Baildon Town Council organised in November last year, the Council has now established a working group to undertake the planning and development work needed to establish and co-ordinate a Street Links Network across Baildon.

This Scheme will build on the Shipley Street Reps and Neighbourhood Watch Schemes, and will seek to attract additional local residents who have an interest in community and civic affairs to sign up as ‘Baildon Street Links’.

Watch out for future information about how you can join up with this scheme.

The market takes place between 9am and 1pm in the Ian Clough car park and is an opportunity to meet the growers and producers of the food we buy.

Whilst you're out and about why not make the most of the fantastic range of cafes and shops Baildon has to offer.

Carols across Baildon
Local sculptors have recently been chosen to produce exhibits for the Yorkshire Armed Forces Sculpture Trail, due to open in the Ferniehurst Dell next summer. The Baildon Dell will be transformed with at least a dozen sculptures along its pathway, and you have the chance to meet and work with the artists.

All you have to do is register for a community art workshop at Titus Salt School. To book your place email Heather Graham (Creative and Community Projects Manager at Titus Salt School).

The aim of this project is to recognise the sacrifice service personnel make, and the issues they face whilst serving our country and when they return to civilian life. So, what better way than to roll up your sleeves, learn something new, and get creative.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM DECEMBER AND JANUARY
Baildon Belles at the carnival
Boxing Day walk
The day was bright and clear for the walk around the Glen organised by the Friends of Bracken Hall.

This festive group met at the Glen tea rooms for tea and cake before setting off on the three mile walk up and down the Glen.

The Friends continue to organise events around the Glen throughout the year - see the website What's On page.
No increase in Baildon precept
At its January meeting, Baildon Town Council voted not to raise the amount of its precept for the year ahead (the local precept is the amount collected for parish and town councils by Bradford Council as part of the overall Council Tax Bill).

The Town Councils' decision means the amount charged locally for a Band D household in Baildon in 2014-2015 will remain set at the same level as last year - at £15.32.

Town Council acts to save land at Hoyle Court

Baildon Town Council has recently acted as a go-between for the Hoyle Court Kirklands Residents’ Association (HCKRA) with Bradford Council to secure the long-term future of an important community green space.

Over the last two years Cllr Ian Lyons and Cllr Barney Lerner have worked as a team, on behalf of the Town Council, to finalize a plan which has resulted in a 25 year lease for the HCKRA Trust at a peppercorn rent.

The green space is very popular and recent events have included Royal Wedding street parties, barbeques, and a Christmas carol singing evening (pictured).

The agreement, signed over the Christmas holiday, means residents will now be able to enjoy their green space, without the threat of development, for decades to come.

CHANGES ON THE TOWN COUNCIL

Baildon Town Council is pleased to welcome David Shaw who replaces Roger L'Amie as one of the two representatives for Baildon West Ward. Roger resigned in October last year because of additional responsibilities as a District Councillor.

David first moved to Baildon sixteen years ago, where he met his future wife. Unable to resist Baildon's pull, they moved back to Baildon last year. They have two children who attend local schools. In his professional life, David manages the Yorkshire office of a national recruitment company.

Since joining the Town Council in December, he has joined three committees: Bracken Hall, Health & Youth and Planning.

David has a great interest in the future of Baildon because this is now his home and the place where his children will make their homes. He has pledged to do all he can to improve services for the young people of Baildon. Read more about David on the Town Council website.

Baildon Town Council was sorry to loose Alan Martin who announced in December that he was resigning from the Council.

Alan has served on the Town Council for a number of years and his calm thoughtful approach to decision making will be missed.

Alan made a significant contribution to the work of the Council particularly as a member of the Planning and the Health and Youth Committees. He brought to his work as a Town Councillor his strong commitment to improving the lives of youngsters in Baildon.

Alan leaves a vacancy in South West Ward which the Council will seek to fill by co-option in March.

If you are interested in being a Town Councillor, look out for the Notice of Co-option which will soon be posted on the Town Council's website home page.
