Lesson 133: Sin in Our Heart
Indwelling sin lives in our heart.
Mark 7:21-23 from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.
Gen.6:5 (just before Noah’s Flood) The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
In Scripture, heart has various meanings. Sometimes it refers to our:
- Mind: as it thinks, understands, reasons, recognizes patterns, judges
- Emotions: as they decide what they like or dislike
- Conscience: as it decides what is right, and warns us before doing wrong
- Will: as it chooses what to do, or refuses to do what God commands
- Entire soul (all of the above) as these elements work together to do good or evil.
About This Series
The goal of this series is to become more useful in serving the Lord Jesus Christ, as an instrument in the Redeemer's hand. The theme verses for the series are Ephesians 4:22-24, Philemon 11, 2 Timothy 2:21
- to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
- and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
- Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.
- Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
