Maria Montessori:

Steven Hughes,

Benefits of brain based approach

Dr Steven Hughes, pediatric neuropsychologist, is a huge advocate of Montessori education. His entertaining talk "Good at Doing Things" highlights how Montessori's brain-based approach to education provides an unparalleled foundation for the development of academic, social, and executive functions critical for advanced problem solving and lifetime success.

Here are a few key points:
  • Our brains grow when they have "Experimental interactions with the environment", when they engage and explore the world
  • More of the brain is dedicated to controlling your hands than any other part of the body
  • Human beings learn best through hands-on exploration of the world, especially in childhood
  • Montessori's hands-on education philosophy is based on the idea that the hands are the tools the mind uses to discover the world.

Middle School Award!

MSBG is pleased to congratulate seventh grader Alexa Whyte on her recent Scholastic Art and Writing contest award.  The competition, sponsored by the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, includes entries from middle and high school students in Indiana and Ohio.

Alexa received a Gold Key, the highest prize awarded in the poetry competition.  Alexa and her mom, Pam, will travel to Fort Wayne on February 9th to receive her award.

Alexa composed her poem for an assignment in her middle school interdisciplinary history and literature study.

Chess Club Updates:

PERSONNEL:  First, Catherine Clawson, who has shepherded the Chess club so ably for the past few years has now moved on to warmer (we hope) climes in N. Carolina and Rebecca Green has taken over her role as coordinator of the Chess club, although Pam Pinson has offered to coordinate the pizza on Mondays.

INTERMEDIATE PRACTICE TIME:  Second, Coach V has stepped down as coach of the Intermediate chess group and Josh Bittner (Coach B) has taken over.  Because of Josh's schedule, he is slightly changing the schedule for the Intermediate students -- starting next week the Intermediate students will meet from 3:45-4:45 rather than 4:00-5:00.

T-SHIRTS: Finally, Rebecca is preparing to order the T-shirts for the Chess students. A short-sleeved T-shirt comes with each student's registration payment.  If you'd like a long-sleeve for an additional $4, let Rebecca know.

Dr. Rebecca Skinner Green

Thank you very much Rebecca and Pam for taking on these new service roles in our school!
