Presidents’ Day Annual Banquet Set for Monday, February 17, 2014

Tables are filling up fast towards a possible sellout, so get your reservations in soon to hear our featured speaker Star Parker. She is the president of, the Center for Urban Renewal & Education (CURE), a non-profit think tank that promotes market-based public policy to fight poverty.
She also spoke at the 1996 Republican National Convention and ran for Congress as a Republican in California’s liberal 37th District. She’s debated Jesse Jackson, fought for school choice on Larry King Live, and defended welfare reform on the Oprah Winfrey Show.  She also confronted Michael Moore on healthcare reform on The View with host Barbara Walters. She is the author of three books: Pimps, Whores & Welfare Brats; Uncle Sam's Plantation; and White Ghetto, and is currently working on a fourth: How the Poor Get Rich.
The banquet begins with a member bar at 6:00pm followed by a 7:00pm gourmet dinner including wine. Dress: semi-formal (jacket & tie). Ticket prices are $125 per person. For an extra $25 you can attend the 530pm Reception for Star Parker. Checks (payable to SIRC) should be mailed or tubed to Mary Ann Senkowski at 8 Mainsail Crossing, Savannah, GA 31411. For reservations, contact Tom Osborn at 598-1799 or tomosborn@bellsouth.net.

2014 Election Process Begins – March 27 – Plantation Ballroom, 500pm

Each candidate will submit written responses to five key questions in advance.  Attendees can then question each of them further about their positions, once they have made brief opening remarks. The candidates: Buddy Carter, Darwin Carter, Jeff Chapman, Bob Johnson, Earl Martin and John McCallum.
Savannah’s Port – Poised for Major Expansion
On January 9, a contingent of the SIRC Board attended a full tour of the Savannah Container Port. It is the largest single facility of its kind in the U.S., handling the fourth largest number of containers in the U.S. and America’s second largest export tonnage. It is poised to handle the huge demand increase for East Coast ports from the West Coast when the Panama Canal expands to handle larger ships.

Savannah’s Special Distinguishing Features:
·   Only one with double rail yards attached to a port;
·    Nine individual berths can handle the largest ships already at high tide, and with deepening, all the largest ships traversing the upgraded Panama Canal.
·   Georgia Ports Authority is both owner and operator
·   Largest client relationship facility to handle customer needs and implement innovative suggestions
·   Westernmost port on the East Coast, with a huge weather and traffic advantage over competitors Charleston, Norfolk, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
·    Handles 38% of all U. S. poultry exports.
·    First to use gigantic straddle cranes to expedite container transfers.
·    Generates over $1.5 billion in added revenue throughout Georgia, with only 1,000 employees.
·    No funding needed from state; as a state Authority, functions as nimbly as a private enterprise.
·    Can do regional planning with potential competitor/collaborator for a possible South Carolina Jasper County port facility on the other side of the Savannah River. Its creation can help both states meet future East Coast demand and help create hundreds of thousands jobs in the region.
