If you're feeling a little like the sheep in this Highland image and the January blues have set in, the HISEZ Newsletter is here to help you refocus. If that alone doesn't motivate you then our Social Enterprise of the month feature surely will.

Atlantis Leisure in Oban will help you work off last month's excesses and prepare you physically for what 2014 has in store. But if you're not in the Oban area simply reading about this enterprise might help get your organisation in shape as having been in operation for 21 years we can all learn something from them.

For those of you with a product to promote there's an exciting opportunity from HIE detailed below. And Plunkett Scotland celebrate their first anniversary, see how they can help you with mentoring and funding.

We're a bit late to wish you a Happy New Year so we'll wish you a Happy Robbie Burns Day instead. Its a good excuse to finish with a brief word from the bard himself to lift your spirits this cold January: 'Now's the day, an now's the hour'. (Robert Burns, Scots Wha' Hae, 1793).
Highlands and Islands Enterprise wishes to showcase a range of high quality products, produced by social enterprises in our area, at a number of major events throughout 2014.  If your social enterprise has a product which you think would be suitable as a promotional gift, and which you could supply in quantities of 50 at a time as a minimum, please get in touch with Polly Chapman at HISEZ by email or phone 07751 019058.  Polly will discuss your product and the requirements in more detail with you and feed this information to HIE as appropriate.  Please contact Polly as soon as possible, but by the end of January at the very latest.

Plunkett Scotland and the Prince's Countryside Fund

In January 2013 Scotland’s Community Retailing Network (CRN) merged with the Plunkett Foundation to create Plunkett Scotland – a new initiative aimed at delivering a comprehensive support service to enterprising communities throughout rural Scotland. During the course of our first year we have established a new frontline service for Scotland with two experienced staff members based in the Highlands.

Plunkett Scotland continues to deliver the excellent support service that had been provided by CRN to rural communities seeking to set up and run community shops. With 29 community shops in Scotland, and an ever-increasing number of enquiries from prospective community enterprises, we are delighted to have secured funding from the Prince’s Countryside Fund to establish a Peer-to-Peer mentoring scheme, and an Inspiring Study Visit scheme.

Plunkett Scotland will also develop networking opportunities for community owned services, helping them to feel part of a wider sector and to facilitate greater learning and sharing of best practice.
