STUFF NEEDED

One of the easiest ways to get your hands on inexpensive collage materials (and support CAA's scholarship fund with your purchase) is to check out the 2nd Chance Table at CAA meetings.

To keep the 2nd Chance Table a groaning board of collage delights, we need stuff!  Donate your unwanted art supplies, magazines, paint, paper, rubber stamps, vintage goodies, etc. Bring them with you to the next meeting.  If you need pick-up or assistance unloading on site, contact Sandy Rooney at 818-249-9006 or artistrooney@yahoo.com

ATTENTION ARTISTS

Are you tired of working in isolation and/or want to see what others are doing?  Would you like to join fellow artists in a supportive and creative environment?

Good news. Los Angeles Experimental Artists (LAEA) Group 4 has openings for four membership applications for 2014.

We are a co-operative group of working mixed-media artists that meets from 10am to 3pm on the first Friday of every month at the Canoga Park Women's Club. Each session features a workshop presented by one of our members in a supportive and professional atmosphere that nourishes our creative spirit.

LAEA-4's next session is February 6, 2014. The annual fee is $75.00; if you'd like to come as a guest, the fee is $15.00 per session, applicable to the annual fee should you end up joining for the year.

CAA Granted IRS 501(c)(3) Status

Nonprofit attorney Jennifer Hughes expertly guided CAA through the application process.  What does the 501(c)(3) designation mean?  She explains:

Collage Artists of America (CAA) evolved organically when nine Los Angeles artists came together to explore the art of collage. As CAA grew, it increasingly began to function as a full-scale non-profit organization by establishing a proactive Board of Directors; holding frequent events and exhibits; and instituting a scholarship program to promote the collage arts. This informal status allowed CAA to collect membership fees but did not qualify it to receive grants, tax-deductible donations or any other funds or discounts designated specifically for non-profit organizations.

Formally filing for IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit status was a matter of necessity for CAA at this stage, for many reasons. Here are a few. The organization is now eligible to receive funds available only to non-profit tax-exempt organizations, including its share of monies contributed over the years to the now dissolving Valley Institute of Visual Arts (VIVA). CAA ran the risk that it would be audited by the IRS and forced to pay penalties or back taxes if it continued to function under the radar. As an official California non-profit corporation, members of the board of directors are protected from personal liability for any injuries that might result from an accident at a CAA event or class.  And donations to CAA may be claimed as tax-deductible.

CAA is now well-positioned for the next phase of its growth.
