Students: Apply to the 2014 Rochester Regional Business Plan Contest

The Center for Entrepreneurship is offering to reimburse the $150 registration fee for promising business plans, written by current University of Rochester students, submitted to the 2014 Rochester Regional Business Plan Contest. Student teams must submit an executive summary of their business plans to cfe@rochester.edu by Monday, January 20 for consideration. All registered Rochester Regional Business Plan Contest teams are invited to attend a series of workshops that run January 29 - February 19. Companies interested in competing must apply online through High Tech Rochester, the organizer of the competition, by Friday, January 24. This contest is open to for-profit companies headquartered in the Greater Rochester region and is not limited to student competitors.


UR Student Seeking Teammates to Enter Agricultural Innovation Competition

Undergraduate Ling Li '17 is seeking University of Rochester student teammates to enter the Agricultural Innovation Prize competition. For the first round, a 2-page summary and a 10-slide presentation deck (PowerPoint) describing an innovation to the agriculture/food system are required to be submitted online by February 28, 2014. KEY Program Info Session: 1/21

Learn about the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) program at an information session Tuesday, January 21 at 4 p.m. in Lattimore 306A. The program offers select students a fifth, tuition-free year of college to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. The program is supported by the College and the Center for Entrepreneurship. Additional information sessions will be held Wednesday, January 29; Thursday, February 6; Monday, February 10; Tuesday, February 18; Monday, February 24; or you may schedule an appointment with KEY program coordinator Liz Monte to learn more. The spring application deadline is Thursday, March 20.


Register Now for First Mark Ain Business Model Workshop: 1/30

The 2014 Mark Ain Business Model Workshop Series kicks off with “Overview of the Competition and Idea Thickening,” a presentation by the Simon Entrepreneurs Association and Mark Wilson, lecturer in entrepreneurship at the Simon School and founder of Initiatives Consulting. The workshop will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Thursday, January 30, in Gleason Hall 318/418. Workshops are free and open to all members of the University and the general public. The competition (submissions are due in April) is open to currently enrolled University students at any level of study. Pizza and refreshments will be provided at each workshop. Attendees must register online or call 276-3500.


TEAM Master's Degree Application Deadline: 2/1

The online application deadline for the Technical Entrepreneurship and Management (TEAM) MS program for students who wish to start in Fall 2014 is Saturday, February 1. If you have any questions about applying, contact Executive Director Andrea Galati.


Save the Date: CFE Open House and Website Launch Party on 2/21

In honor of National Entrepreneurship Week, the Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting an Open House and Website Launch Party on Friday, February 21 at 3:00 p.m. in 1-211 Carol Simon Hall. Guests will learn what entrepreneurship at the University of Rochester is all about. Attendees must register online or call 276-3500.


All College Students: Enter the NYBPC Finger Lakes Region Contest

The Finger Lakes Regional Contest of the New York State Business Plan Competition, an intercollegiate business plan competition, is accepting applications now through Sunday, March 9, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. Students are invited to submit to one of the following six categories:

  • Biotechnology / Healthcare

  • Energy / Sustainability

  • Information Technology / Software

  • Nanotechnology / Advanced Technology

  • Products / Services

  • Social Entrepreneurship / Non-Profit

A two-page written application is all that is required to enter (a full business plan is not necessary). Regional semi-finalists will be invited to the presentation round at the University of Rochester on Wednesday, April 9. Winners from this round will go head-to-head with finalists from nine other regions for $500,000 in cash and in-kind prizes at the statewide competition on Friday, April 25 at the University at Albany. The competition is open to currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students. Download the application and visit the web page for more information and complete rules. There is no fee to enter. Students: Apply to the Clinton Global Initiative University

President Clinton will host the seventh meeting of Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) from March 21-23, 2014 at Arizona State University. The CGI U 2014 application is now available online. The final application deadline is January 17, 2014In order to apply to attend the CGI U meeting, each student must develop and submit a Commitment to Action. There are three criteria for Commitments to Action:

  • New: Each commitment must be a new initiative, or an expansion of an existing effort that focuses on a different geographic area, works with new partners, or shifts in focus or scope.
  • Specific: Each commitment must address a specific challenge with a defined course of action and detailed objectives.
  • Measurable: Each commitment should achieve measurable results that can be reported back to CGI U.

UR Students: Apply to the Student Incubator

The University of Rochester has opened student incubator space at High Tech Rochester, made possible by Simon alumnus Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA). Student Incubator companies will have access to all client amenities within the HTR Lennox Tech Enterprise Center, as well as access to High Tech Rochester’s Director of New Ventures and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who can provide additional coaching, mentoring, and connections. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; Rochester students at any level of study can apply. The incubator is accessible on the bus loop.
