Volunteers Needed

Scholarship Committee
Want to help ZaCSA award money to outstanding individuals?

Consider joining the ZaCSA Scholarship Committee! ZaCSA awards scholarships to graduating Zama American High School seniors and other SOFA-status dependents. Last year, ZaCSA awarded over $21,800 to 22 deserving individuals.

The time commitment is minimal and will begin in March/April. Two committees of volunteers are needed:  one to rate applicants and one to divide the scholarship money among recipients. Please visit zacsa.org for more details about last year's scholarships, and email me if you're interested in helping with this worthy effort! Thank you!

A Note from the President...

Hello everyone! I hope that this February issue of Wind Chimes finds you warm and healthy.

January was another month full of events for ZaCSA members. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Make it, Bake it, Fake it! Members shared some really great baking, crafting, painting, and sewing talents to the delight of other members. We were able to fund raise $520 from the Silent Auction and have fun done it while learning more about our unique community. Thank you to Command Sergeant Major Najee for sharing information about Garrison at the brunch and answering many questions about the old and the new for our community.

The February General Membership event is going to be another exceptional evening! Bring your spouse and listen to a surviving member of a Japanese Samurai Family discuss 1000 Years of Samurai Tradition and perform a demonstration. Get your tickets early for this one!

Becky Cook has worked diligently on organizing all of the different Friendship Group activities this year. If you are a new member and have not participated in a Friendship Group activity but would like to, contact Becky at zacsa.peopletopeople@gmail.com. She has lists of all the events scheduled and waiting lists.
The events planned are true cultural experiences that everyone should participate in while living in Japan. This month, there are activities planned with Heart to Heart Group and Soroptomist Zama.

In March, we will be hosting ZaCSA’s 8th Annual Basket Auction. This event is specifically designed to raise scholarship money for Zama American High School graduating seniors. We all know how expensive going to college can be, especially if your child is graduating this year and is expecting to enroll into a college this fall. Last year, ZaCSA was able to give seventeen scholarships to graduating seniors because of the amount of money raised at the ZaCSA Basket Auction. This event is big and important to our community. It will be held on a Saturday March 15. Please see inside this issue for more details on donating a basket, volunteering or attending the 8th Annual Basket Auction. Jill Russell is the chairperson for this event, so if you have any questions contact her at zacsa.basketauction@gmail.com or call  080-5962-1363 C or 773-305-3085 H.

Lastly, while you are out and about on Camp Zama, I want to encourage you to stop by East Meets West and bring your friends. The shop is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. I hope to see you at some of the many events planned this month and at East Meets West.

Yours truly,
Beth van Kan
President, ZaCSA

East Meets West Gift Shop
Did you Know...??

Shopping at East Meets West gives back to the community
The money from the sale of vintage items at East Meets West provides funds towards grants given to the community.  So when you come in and shop, you are not just getting something special for yourself or a gift for a friend, but you are also giving to others in the community and making it a better place to live.

We have a ‘Wish List’
The East Meets West Gift Shop is always on the lookout for interesting and unique Japanese vintage items.  If you are looking for something that we do not have, you can let us know by adding it to our ‘Wish List’.  The ‘Wish List’ is kept at the register and each time our buyers go out, they review the list and make an effort to fulfill your requests.  When they find what you requested, we will give you a call to let you know.  So please come by and make a wish.

We have ‘Information Cards’
If you are giving an item as a gift, many of our items also have information cards that explain the meaning or history of an item. Just let us know when you check out and we can provide them to you.
We have a ‘Rewards Program’
When you spend $100 during a two month period you can earn $5.00 off of your next purchase, during that same two month time frame.  When you make a purchase, please provide your name, and we will enter it into the register.  Then, each time you make a purchase thereafter, remember to tell us your name, and our computer keeps track of the rest.  Only one $5.00 reward can be used towards a single purchase and rewards cannot be redeemed for cash.

When the East Meets West Gift Shop is open
If you see the East Meets West flags flying in the parking lot across from the Post Office on Camp Zama, we are open. We are located at Building 375 and open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM every Tuesday and Thursday, and the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. In February we will be closed starting February 1st for inventory.  We will reopen February 18th.

To our many loyal customers, thanks for your support and input. To those of you who have not been in the shop yet, we hope to see you soon.
