Welcome on board The Big Song Relay. To keep you all informed of the latest developments we’re planning to send out an email every few weeks from now until your local relay day. They will be numbered and should act as a reference document of FAQs and Answers. If you have specific questions you’d like us to answer, please email  info@aliburns.co.uk

The Big Song Relay is produced by Hands Up For Trad as part of the Big Big Sing, produced by Glasgow UNESCO City of Culture.
The Big Song Relay Training Day
You can now SIGN UP FOR THE BIG SONG RELAY TRAINING DAY on April 5th at Victoria Hall in Dunblane.  We’ll spend the day leaning the song and its harmonies, working with the English, Scots and Gaelic versions so you can choose what you’d like for your choir. You’ll get a song pack of all the music and a lyric sheet along with a cd of all the backing parts, the harmony parts sung separately.
The day will begin at 10.30 and run until 4.30pm. This is a free event and will also include a delicious lunch!

The Song

Our song - Here's to All our Common Wealth - is now finished and we're hugely pleased to announced that Robyn Stapleton: BBC Radio Scotland Yound Traditional Musician of the Year 2014 is going to sing lead vocal on the recording. She'll be joined by a stellar line-up of Scotland's traditional musicians to record a backing track for choirs to perform with.

SImon Thoumire is writing a brand new pipe tune to go with the song - so if you have pipe or wind bands that your choir could join forces with - there will be a part for them to play.

Performing The Song

In order to make the experience as accessible as possible to a wide range of people you can choose the performance version that will best suit your group. We'll have Scots and Gaelic versions of the song all available as downloads by 5th April ready for our training day in Dunblane. Choirs can then mix and match harmonies and language to make their own unique version of the song.

You might want to just sing in unison to a backing track that we’ll provide. This might be a good option if you’re planning a ‘open to all comers’ approach without much rehearsal or if your group has lots of inexperienced singers.

Or if your choir is more ambitious you may want to go for the unaccompanied harmony version that will also be available. Or add your own instrumentation.

All the separate harmony parts, backing parts and written music will be available as downloads by April 5th. Nd if you come along to the training day you'll get a CD of all the parts in your Training pack.

If you have a pipe band that would like to join in, there will also be a specially written tune available as a download. The tune will segway into the song to make a longer, more substantial performance.

How Do I Get Started?

For the simplest involvement you can simply take your choir to the route and sing informally either acapella or using our backing track played on your own CD player or amp and speakers. Be sure and let us know if this is the option you choose – so we can feed it back into the final evaluation of the whole day.

Or you may want to join forces with other local choirs to make a big group with more impact. If you’d like to know what other choirs from your area have signed up then get in touch with Linzi Murphy at  ScotlandSings@handsupfortrad.co.uk She can also keep you informed as new choirs sign up over the next couple of months.

On the 18th February we'll be meeting with all the Local Authority contacts in Scotland and will have a chance to let know about and get them on board with the Big Song Relay. Were hoping that very soon we'll have a named person in your region that you can liaise with.
Can I get local school children to sing along with my choir?

Background

This event will be part of the Big Big Sing - a programme of events to celebrate singing at the Commonwealth Games and throughout 2014.
The aim is to have 40 performances from choirs to greet the baton carriers as they run the length and breadth of Scotland in the weeks leading up to the opening of the Commonwealth Games on 24th July 2014.  This is a wonderful opportunity to bring together Scotland’s singers in a huge community of song and for you to be part of the vibrant and growing network of choirs and singers round Scotland.
