From the Editor
Dear <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>

Greetings from GP! The 5th issue of the newsletter is here with updates, reviews, tips, interviews, and new releases. Some years back, I read Dr. Gar Roper’s wonderful novel Hidden Grace which is about healing of a victim of child abuse in a foster family. It gave me the creeps to think of a helpless child falling prey to a sadistic couple who are supposed to care for her. However, foster families are not always cruel and here I am watching Theresa Fraser’s video interview in which describes her experience with caring foster families. And she has some important points to discuss. If you have anything to say about foster care, feel free to send us your comments/stories.

Happy Reading!

Golden Guide: Ten things foster parents can do to foster a sense of belonging with their families
Theresa Fraser is author of Billy Had To Move (Loving Healing Press, 2009), a book based on the children that she has known after working in Children's Mental Health over the last 25 years. Here is Theresa’s mini-guide for foster parents to develop a sense of belonging in the children they bring up in their family.

  • Take pictures of special events and family outings.
  • Display yearly family portraits so the message communicated
is that everyone is part of this family.
  • Make photo CDs to watch on the computer or TV so
memories are reinforced when watched (add music for fun).
  • Label coat hooks & drawers for children’s belongings so children
feel that not only are their items valued, but so are they!
  • Involve children in decorating and setting up their bedrooms.
  • Utilize referential conversations so kids hear positive things
that you are saying about them to others.
  • Spend at least ten minutes of one-to-one time with each child
    every day.
  • “Talk in the future” by saying things like, “next year we
should go to the Drive-In again “or “for your birthday next
year, we could make tacos again if you would like”.
  • Provide opportunities for the kids to contribute to family
projects such as gardening or painting rooms etc.
  • Take family vacations even if only for a weekend—these too
    are memory-making.
