It's a GREAT day to be a Knight!
Norway Vulcan Area School News for February 17, 2014

The New 'Normal' from the Eyes of a Student

In the Norway-Vulcan Area Schools, change is everywhere. If you think back to last year at this time, how much different is the way you go about your normal school day? I know mine is almost completely different. I think back to last year having a locker full of books and papers. Now I look in my locker and see only 2 books and 2 notebooks. I think about the teachers having to argue over who had the rights to the computer lab each hours. Now I see technology everywhere. I think about the teachers that I couldn't imagine using all the technology that our school has given us the opportunity to have and yet they are using it in more ways than I could have imagined.

One of the changes is a new course offered here at Norway High School. It is called Tech Integration and Applications. This course teaches students a whole new level of technology. In addition to lessons completed in a new NHS iTunesU course, students get hands-on and project based learning experience in troubleshooting, integrating technology and so much more. The students who take this course get to facilitate the iPad distribution and maintenance and see what it is like to help run the technology in a 1:1 (every student has a device) school district. This could prove to be an invaluable skill since this is likely how every school environment will be someday soon. The 'techies', as they are called, will also be instructing on technology topics using video and screencasting on the school YouTube channel. This course allows students to really learn the ins and outs of technology and in addition, run the new coffee shop and tech help desk. I am enrolled in this course and in my opinion the tech class is and will be one of the most useful courses offered. For students looking to get into computer technologies after high school this is an ideal class. It doesn't only benefit the students though because the students in the course are accustomed to explaining technology to their own parents or elders, and can explain to other students, teachers or anybody else who has a tech question in a simplified way to help them understand. I think the 1:1 program is a great thing. It puts students into a better, more exciting, learning environment. I honestly think this is one of the best things in education.

Another change is the increased communication between teachers, students and parents. Norway High School sophomore Jamie LaCount states, "The way we are learning has changed. We can always have contact with our teachers for questions and answers with our school provided iPads using GMail and edmodo". Several use Remind101 or edmodo to alert students and parents of upcoming tests, important class announcements and more. Teachers around the building are using their Weebly website pages to help students learn by posting the notes, practice problems, videos, & homework!  Mr. Adams is very active on his Weebly page posting extra credit assignments for students to complete if they just take the time to complete it. The Apple TVs in all of the classrooms throughout the school are great for when students have projects that are on their iPads. All they have to do is connect to the Apple TV and they can present to the entire class right from their desk! Certain high school courses are available now in iTunes U and our school is applying to be an iTunes U approved institution and has just become an edmodo school with their own domain. A walk down the halls of our school will show a brand new gym and bleachers, a new weight room, flat screen TVs which will soon display announcements, QR codes on the walls, students using iPads at every turn and even six new teachers and a new technology director. Change is everywhere and it truly is a 'GREAT day to be a Knight'.

Mrs. Berndt

Mrs. Erin Berndt is in her 17th year at Norway High School.  Before coming to Norway, she taught for six years at North Dickinson and one year in Wisconsin.  She and her husband are cheese-heads at heart, but have called the Upper Peninsula home since 1991.

Mrs. Berndt graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a degree in English and secondary education.  She has a master degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Library and Information Science and she was the part-time Library Media Specialist at Norway for three years.

She currently teaches 10th & 11th grade English and 7th grade Careers.  Mrs. Berndt serves as senior class advisor, drama club advisor and Reading Olympics Coordinator.  She is married and has three boys, one dog named Clover and a kitten named Super Cat.

When she isn’t teaching she is spending time with her family, reading, and trying to figure out how to further torture her students.  We are so delighted to have her teaching at our school. Words can’t describe how amazing she really is.

Thanks Mrs. B for all that you do! (:

Knights' Sports

2014 Wrestling

The Norway Wrestlers have been busy lately and are enjoying a very successful season. In addition to participating in the Got Milk? campaign and having their team poster plastered all over the county, last Wednesday the team participated in regional competition at Manistique and completed an impressive win against Rogers City and Westwood to win the tournament. They are now moving on to state finals which is in Battle Creek, Michigan this upcoming weekend.

In addition to team play, individual wrestling regionals took place this past weekend with Cole Gonzalez, Zach DeCremer and Taylor Bonetti advancing to state finals. Individual state finals are held the weekend following team finals. These finals will take place at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Congratulations to all wrestlers for a very successful year and making us proud to be a Knight.

Technology Q & A

Cleaning And Maintaining your IPad

Handle your iPad with care to maintain its appearance. If you are concerned about scratching or abrasion, you can use one of the many cases sold separately. To clean your iPad, unplug all cables and turn the iPad off (press and hold the Lock button, and then slide the onscreen slider). Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. DO NOT use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the iPad. Since iPads have an oleophobic coating on the screen, you should simply wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands. The ability of this coating to repel oil will diminish over time with normal usage, and rubbing the screen with an abrasive material will further diminish its effect and may scratch your screen.

From the Desk of the Principal

Mr. Tinti

Even though everyone has been battling the cold, Norway High School has been a very busy place with activities and events.

Winterfest took place a couple weeks back and was a great experience for all of our students.   The week went very well and the student participation in spirit week and the pep rally remained high.  Congratulations to Queen Hannah Anderson and King Alex Carlson.

Winter sports are in full swing and tournaments are quickly approaching.  We wish all of our teams the best of luck to the end of the season and in their respective state tournaments.

The junior class took part in the third segment of our popular ACT preparation class last week.  The final ACT prep class will take place on February 19th and is a great tool to help NHS students prepare for their testing which takes place March 4th, 5th, and 6th.

NVAS will be sending a team of teachers to the MACUL conference in Grand Rapids March 12th-14th.  Mr. Tinti, Mrs. Myllyla, Mrs. Leiker, Mrs. Broden, Mrs. Nelson, and Mr. Martell will be representing grades 7-12.   This conference focuses on technology in education and is always a great learning experience for attendees.  The faculty attending will be presenting information taken from the conference to staff.

The NHS Student Council is currently preparing for a Bullying Awareness Week that is schedule to start on March 24th.  This will be a week-long event and will include guest speakers, activities, and a video/poster competition.   Video instructions were sent out to student emails and are posted in various locations in the hallways.  Further details will be found on our school Facebook page and email.

This year has been flying by at an amazing pace and the seniors are mostly likely counting down the days.  Hopefully some warmer weather will arrive in the next few weeks as we transition into spring.
