Mock Accident!

In an effort to make our school more aware of what happens during and after prom, YAC (Youth Advisory Committee) is putting on a Mock Accident in April. YAC's motivation is to show students what can happen when they decide to make destructive decisions, such as texting and driving or driving under the influence. Classmates, family, teachers, or a complete stranger can be injured by a student's decision to do something illegal.

A Mock Accident is like a fake car crash, just because it is "fake" does not mean it can't be realistic and memorable. Several cars will be involved and students may be participating in the mock accident. In some cases, victims have been seen in the cars involved in a Mock Accident. Many local agencies will be present including the local Emergency Response System, North Alert EMS, the Fire Department, and the local Law Enforcement.

The goal of this project is to show students that tragedy can happen, at any minute, on any given day. How do you think you would react if you saw an actual NHS students injured in an accident? Or what if it were one of your best friend's parents? YAC is sponsoring this event. SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) is also participating. As a community service organization, YAC hopes to impact the student body by emphasizing the effects of making destructive decisions and the dramatic impact it can have on students and families.

App Spotlight

Quizlet

Quizlet is an online learning tool created several years ago by then high school sophomore Andrew Sutherland in Albany, California. It is ONLINE flashcards! How neat! They can be used on any mobile device including your cellphone and school provided iPad. In addition to learning important information through flashcards, users can also play games with the terms, race against friends in Scatter and even generate tests! The world shares knowledge on Quizlet so oftentimes somebody has already created a set with the user's course content! Students and parents alike can oftentimes find flashcards created by those who have studied the same material before them to make accessing this information even easier. Be sure to download the free Quizlet app and check out the website to help you succeed in school and just become more 'genius' on any subject you like!

From the Editor

I’m a junior and Class President so I've been thinking a lot about prom lately. Like what is our theme going to be? Who is going to be on court? Are we going to invite underclassmen to our Junior prom? Everything! I'm super excited for it! If anyone has any suggestions please email them to me, I'm curious as to what everyone wants for a theme. If anyone doesn't know already prom will be May 3rd, 2014.

Also Juniors, we need to start thinking of some ideas for fundraising. A few of us were thinking of selling coffee, hot chocolate and breakfast foods before school, or hosting an all schools dance (invite local schools and have a casual dance) or even having a movie night, where we would watch a movie on a Friday night where you buy your ticket and your ticket would give you either a free drink or free popcorn and admission to the movie. If anyone has anything else they think we could profit from please get a hold of me or Mrs.Miller! Thanks! :) Hope everyone had a great week!

Knights' Sports

2014 Girls Basketball

There is a consensus going around that the girls basketball team needs more fans guys--yes that said GUYS. Boys teams tend to get more adult and student fans, and we at The Knightly News would like to promote more fan attendance at all games-girls and boys. MHSAA Girls District Tournament action is coming up this week! NHS has a bye for the first game and then following that will play the winner of the Iron Mountain vs. West Iron County game. Let's get rowdy in the stands and support Norway Vulcan Area Schools' sports teams! Cheer on our Lady Knights at Districts this week! Good luck girls' basketball team!

Technology Q & A

Are QR codes safe?

What are QR Codes? They come to us from Japan where they are very common. QR is short for Quick Response (they can be read quickly by a cell phone). You may see QR Codes all over the halls of NHS for The Knightly News, in magazine advertisements, on billboards, on fliers, on a website or even on someone’s t-shirt. Once it is in your cell phone, it can give details about a business (allowing users to search for nearby locations), display a couponbring up a website, show a movie trailer, play an instructional video or even display information about the person wearing the t-shirt with the code on it. To utilize QR Codes, a QR Reader app must be downloaded to your cellphone or iPad. Simply search the app store for 'QR Code Reader' and choose one of the many available free apps. Use the 'scan' tool within the app while pointing your device camera at the code and the rest is automated. The website will appear, the video will play or whatever action the creator chose will complete. Try the QR above the article to give it a whirl (it will redirect to the school facebook page so be sure you are logged in to facebook first)!

QR codes are safe. Just be sure to never enter personal information to access something from scanning a QR code. You must also ensure that the app you download to view your QR is from a reputable source. Always check app reviews and star ratings before downloading. QR codes are very convenient, so why do some claim they are dangerous? Due to the fact that unlike a written web address, a QR code cannot be read by the human eye, the user cannot be sure where they are being redirected. If Knightly News readers stay informed and follow the steps above, QR Codes can be an excellent way to consume the digital information that surrounds us here at Norway Vulcan Area Schools.

From the Desk of our Athletic Director

Mr. Castelaz

The girls regular season basketball concluded last week.  The district tournament is this week.  Just as a reminder, the Mountaineers and Wykons play on Wednesday at 6:00 for the right to play the Knights on Friday at 6:00 for the district title.  The winner advances to the regional tournament in Escanaba against the winner of the L'Anse district. The game will be played on Tuesday March 4th at 5:00 C.S.T.  Again a reminder that all M.H.S.A.A. tickets are $5 and no passes are accepted at tournament games.

The boys regular season concludes this week with two games.  On Monday, Stephenson will be here to play the Knights.  This will be our last home game for the 2013-2014 basketball season.  The boys district will be held in West Iron County on Monday, March 3rd and 5th.  We drew the bye in this district also, and will play the winner of the Wykon and Mountaineer game on Wednesday, March 5th at 6:00.  The winner of the boys district advances to Marquette to play the winner of the Calumet district.  The regional games will be held the week of March 10th.

This weekend in the high school and middle school gyms the annual Don Hill Memorial tournament will be held.  This is a Saturday and Sunday affair and the money raised goes to a scholarship given to a senior boy in Coach Hill's memory.  There will be men's division split into three divisions and a women's division also.

Our competitive cheer team was in Sparta, Michigan for the regional cheer competition on Saturday of last week.  Although they didn't qualify for the state finals this week end, they concluded on a high note.

Norway will be the sight of a boys and girls basketball tournament on Saturday and Sunday, March 15th and 16th.  This tournament will be for 7th and 8th grade teams. Games will be held throughout the days until a champion is crowned.  Plan on coming over to watch some good basketball played by some young basketball players.

Last but definitely not least, our wrestling team traveled to Battle Creek last weekend to take part in the team state tournament.  The team has a tough task ahead of them, but regardless of the outcome they had a great season.  This weekend three of our wrestlers, Cole Gonzales, Taylor Bonetti and Zac DeCremer will be at The Palace in Auburn Hills for the state finals in the individual state tournament.  Again this is a great end for a great job done by our coaches and wrestlers.

It does not look like spring outside but our athletes will soon be involved in spring sports.  The first day for spring sports practice is March 10th.  Again more on this in coming articles.

That's it for this week.  See you at the games and Go Knights!

Student Council Scoop #SCS

Written by Student Council member Aubrey Parrish

How does one impact society? How does one shape the future? Questions like these have whizzed around the room at many student council meetings over the past several months, usually pertaining to The Bully Project. This project, a campaign against bullying, has grown into quite a big deal. Plans for a guest speaker, movie viewing, hourly fact reading (via announcements), pledges, and many other ideas have been discussed and are currently in the works. The Student Council hopes that the Project will help students become more aware of the different types of bullying as well as the effects of it, ultimately beginning to put an end to bullying as a whole. The Bully Project will launch before the school year is out, and we’re all very excited about it. :-).
