School for Social Care Research

HIGHLIGHT

Your priorities for adult social care research?

Imagine you had funding available for research into aspects of adult social care. What would your priorities be? Would you want to develop new systems or interventions through research, or evaluate a current practice, policy or system? How innovative would you be?

How would you allocate funding to practitioner, carer and/or user-led research (or research that is led together by these groups and researchers as one)? What would those studies look like, and what areas would they focus on?

How would you want to engage with decision-makers? How would you want to communicate information about research and its messages, and what methods would you use?

Email us at sscr@lse.ac.uk or call 020-7955-6238 with your suggestions and comments. We will collate suggestions received by 10 March 2014 to feed into our development of plans for the School's next five years; and please do send any further suggestions or comments anytime thereafter for the School to consider.

RESEARCH

Changing staff practices, rather than restraining adults with complex needs, can hold answers to challenging behaviour

Aggression is easily misunderstood: making environments more predictable and honouring routines and activities can transform behaviour.

Research led by Professor Peter McGill at the Tizard Centre, University of Kent, is examining how greater staff expertise pays dividends for all.

EVENT REPORT

Carers: informing and improving policy and practice through research and evaluation

SSCR held a joint one-day event with the Social Services Research Group on carers research on 30 January 2014 at the LSE. It was an excellent day:

“Really interesting and thought provoking day... more to do to get research into policy and practice”
Helena Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK, and event chair
