                         Peak Challenge 2014

Going ALL IN together for the sake of going ALL OUT for others.

Wilderness.

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act in the United States. There are over 109 million acres that have been designated as "wilderness" during those 50 years. The Act defines "wilderness" as areas where "the earth and its communities of life are left unchanged by people, where the primary forces of nature are in control, and where people themselves are visitors who do not remain."

The photo above is the Cirque of Towers in Wyoming's Wind River Range and the Bridger Wilderness Area. One of the most beautiful places in America that I was able to enjoy on a week long backpack trip after law school graduation. We did not see another human being for that entire week. Wilderness.

The Bible has the Wilderness Metaphor running through it from front cover to back. It is lived out in the lives of people such as David, Moses, the disciples and many others. As Ashley Denton, a noted outdoor adventure expert, notes "learning from the Wilderness Metaphor teaches us something but journeying in the wilderness makes us something."

Peak Challenge is a Wilderness Experience. But our definition of "wilderness" differs a bit from the one used by Congress as noted above. We know that God does use the wilderness at Peak Challenge to change and transform men while leaving the mountain setting as is. The force of God is in control. We do not remain, but return from the mountains to lead and love in the valleys.

We will explore more about "wilderness" in the upcoming Enewsletters. It is our hope that the fire of a wilderness experience will burn in you in these months prior to Peak Challenge.

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, â€œis this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ' Love all your neighbors as yourself'" --  Mark 12:28-31 NIV with edits
