BUDGET TIME AGAIN
To all the Chairs of church committees: Please be thinking about the Budget your committee will need in the 2014-2015 fiscal year.  We'd like to have all budget requests in by early March so we can put an accurate Church Budget together for the coming year.  Any questions?  Please call Vikki in the office at 508-994-9686 ext 12.
JOYS & CONCERNS
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of former longtime member, Marguerite "Nellie" Schellenberg, who passed away peacefully in her home in Arizona on January 10th.  Nellie sent a donation to us each year to cover the costs of sending her our monthly newsletter so she could keep up with everything going on back here at First Unitarian.  She is fondly remembered by many current members and she will be greatly missed.

Don't forget to check in with elderly relatives, friends & neighbors during this cold winter weather.  Make sure they are warm enough and are able to get groceries and other essentials.  When it snows, make sure they are shoveled out and have an ice-free walkway.
UPCOMING EVENTS
VALENTINE'S CHOCOLATE AUCTION
Don't forget! This Sunday, we'll be holding the Annual Valentine's Auction, featuring baskets of chocolate goods, gifts cards, sweets, and wine, immediately following the service.  Please consider making, baking or buying something chocolate, sweet and delicious to auction off at the event. If possible, please bring your donations into the office by this Friday, February 7th.  Otherwise, you may bring them in on Sunday and give them to Ron or Sylvia White or Larry Jaquith.
Frederick Douglass Community Read-A-Thon

On Sunday, February 9, 2014 from 2-6pm
First Unitarian Church
will host the New Bedford Historical Society's 14th Annual Frederick Douglass Community Read-A-Thon of
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave written by Himself (1845).

If you would like to be a reader, please contact the NBHS office at 508-979-8828 or email John Centeio at info@nbhistoricalsociety.org.

In case you are not aware, Frederick Douglass had his first paying job as free man HERE at First Unitarian Church! We are a part of the history of this great man.  Come celebrate his life with us this Sunday!
Social Justice Team News
We worked hard, organized by our Social Justice Team, to collect signatures for a strong minimum wage. The State Senate has passed a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $11.00, but the house wants to reduce unemployment benefits to "off-set" the costs. We do not believe that this is prudent or wise for the people of Massachusetts. On February 16th the Social Justice Team will have at table in the Parish Hall to help those who would call, email, text or tweet, their State Rep, to let them know how you feel about this "compromise".
General Assembly is gearing up. Delegates will be needed soon to represent First Unitarian Church at our annual General Assembly this year to be held in Providence RI. More than 6000 UU's are expected to attend this event from all over the cournty and all around the globe. Delegates are expected to attend all General Sessions and to vote on matters that come before the body. We invite anyone interested in serving as a delegate to talk to Rev. Paul or members of the Board of Trustees. Applications for scholarship are also available on the UUA GA website: http://uua.org/ga/
One need not be a delegate to attend, anyone registered for the event can attend GA programming.

Everyone is invited to attend the worship service on Sunday June 29th at the RI Convention Center. We hope you will choose to join thousands of UU's as we gather to shape what is of worth to us, together.

PLAYGROUP
Parent and Child Waldorf Play Group
for children 2-3 years old

9:00 - 11:00 Monday mornings in the Green Room
Beginning February 17th 2014

The morning will begin with free play for the children. There will be articles to discuss about various parenting topics while parents work on simple handwork projects. There may be painting or other age appropriate arts or crafts for the children. Everyone participates in a circle time that may include nursery rhymes, seasonal songs, lullabies, and a simple story. Children and parents assist in preparing an organic snack that is shared family-style. The day will conclude with outdoor play as time and weather permit.
The program is free. We will be accepting donations for food and supplies.

For more information and to register (registration is required) please email Victoria Capon, a Waldorf Early Childhood teacher,

FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS

BE AN OLYMPIC GIVER!!!
Everyone wins when we give to the LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES!  It doesn't matter if you are a GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE medal giver.  Bring in whatever you can, and you'll be an OLYMPIC CHAMPION to those who are less fortunate.
Most needed items are: peanut butter, canned tuna or canned meats, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, pancake mix and personal care items such as shampoo, razors or toothpaste.
Deepening Opportunities:
Race the Power of an Illusion
Please join us for a two part series on race and racism.
Tuesdays- February 18 and 25 at 6-8pm in the Sanctuary.
From the film maker: What is "race"? Race: The Power of an Illusion demonstrates how race is both a biological myth and a social invention. The documentary series uncovers the history of race, the "science" that justified it, and traces how these beliefs took such a furious hold on our imaginations, arguing that while race may be a biological fiction, the consequences of racism are very real.
An hour long video will be followed by discussion.
Please sign up by contacting Linda in the office (nbu718@aol.com). If you'd like to attend and need childcare, please let Linda know.

SPIRIT OF ART

PLEASE NOTE: Spirit Of Art  has moved to THURSDAYS! We will meet every Thursday from 9-11am, members and friends of the congregation are always welcome, please RSVP to Victoria Capon at vruthcapon@gmail.com if you plan on joining us. Thanks!

These circles are an opportunity to reflect more deeply on concerns and issues of spiritual growth. Circles begin with a short reading to focus discussion. Topics might include:
Our powerfulness (as described by Marianne Williamson), Patience and repetition in our lives, trust and being trustworthy. We hope you will join us as we explore our values and ways that we can live them more fully.
