Take Action on International Indigenous Peoples Day!

Encourage President Obama to Endorse the
U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) – developed by indigenous peoples and countries from across the globe over the course of several decades – represents the most comprehensive international statement on indigenous rights to date. When the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration in September of 2007, the U.S. was one of only four countries that voted "no". Since that time, Australia and New Zealand have changed their postures, endorsing the Declaration. President Obama has initiated a review of the U.S. policy, though a positive outcome is by no means guaranteed.

Tell President Obama to endorse the Declaration now!

Throughout the Amazon, indigenous groups are fighting for the rights articulated in the Declaration: to self-determination, to self-government, to own, develop and control their lands, territory and resources, to health, amongst many others. Yet, the vast tracts of pristine rainforest that indigenous peoples have preserved for millennia are now being auctioned off as empty areas from which natural resources can simply be extracted, primarily to benefit governments and foreign investors. U.S. foreign policy – and the actions of U.S. based companies – too often contribute to an environment in which the rights enshrined in the UNDRIP are violated. We all must campaign tirelessly so these powerful institutions adopt and, crucially, implement the highest human rights standards.

You can help save the Amazon and protect indigenous peoples' rights and their environment. Just visit the webpage of the Indian Law Resource Center (ILRC) from which you can send a letter straight to President Obama, encouraging the U.S. to endorse the Declaration without reservations or exceptions. Amazon Watch is participating in the campaign to galvanize a tidal wave of supportive public comments between now and October, when the comment period wraps up. Let President Obama know that it is time for the U.S. to make a real commitment to respect and protect indigenous peoples' rights. Take action today in celebration of International Indigenous Peoples Day!
