Dear Friends,
After my Newspace artist residency in Portland, Oregon last April I began hand printing 11x14" and 24x30" C-Print editions of my residency project Portraitlandia in the darkroom at RayKo. I recently updated my website with scans of these new prints, you're invited to view the gallery here.
Portraitlandia is a side project, a respite from the long-term work I began in 2008 on the economic recession in the US and the resulting bankruptcy of Stockton, CA. It was researched and planned out over a year, but it was created quickly, in just a month. So it's been interesting to watch this side project go viral; there's been a wave of interest in it. Since its release last June I've had over 3 million hits on my website. Portraitlandia has been published in England, China, Russia, Spain, Germany, France, and more. It's been on Australian TV (the video can be seen here). Selections from Portraitlandia have already been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery, London; Candela Gallery, Richmond, VA; the Center for Fine Art Photography, Ft. Collins, CO; and RayKo Gallery, San Francisco, CA. More pieces are scheduled for exhibitions in Houston, TX; Edinburgh, Scotland; Cheltenham, England; and San Francisco, CA. I'm surprised and grateful by the doors this 'side project' has opened.
The first opportunity to view a couple of the framed editions in Portland, Oregon (where they belong) will be the Artist-in-Residence exhibition opening at Newspace this Friday, February 7, from 6-9 PM. Newspace printed a booklet of portfolios from their six artists-in-residence, including images from Portraitlandia. Everyone is invited.
