Bannockburn 700 event reduced to two days - no Monday programme

The event to mark the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn is to be cut by a day, organisers have said.

"Bannockburn Live" was to have been a three-day event over the last weekend of June. William Douglas, convenor of the Douglas Clan Gathering has expressed huge disappointment at the change in plans.

"Clansmen and clanswomen were planning to attend the Monday programme of events, and continue with Douglas Clan Gathering for the rest of the week," said William. "But one spin-off is that now we will have the benefit of their company at Aberdour and Lochleven."

VisitScotland has said Bannockburn Live will now take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 June, with the hours extended by two hours until 7pm.

Ticket prices start at Â£20 for an adult and organisers said they had sold about 2,000 so far.

The Battle of Bannockburn on 24 June 1314 is one of the most significant events in Scottish history.

Robert the Bruce led the Scots to a decisive victory over the forces of King Edward II of England at the battle site near Stirling.

The Bannockburn Live event will include a large-scale "brutally realistic" re-enactment involving 300 people, taking place three times each day.

Gathering Programme

We are now fairly firm on how the programme will look for daytime events.

Monday 30th June: Visit Aberdour and Lochleven Castles
Tuesday 1st July: Visit Bothwell and Douglas Castles, the Douglas Heritage Museum and St Bride's Church
Wednesday 2nd July: Visit Dirleton and Tantallon Castles and Lennoxlove House
Thursday 3rd July: Visit Lincluden Abbey, Threave Castle and the Douglas Mausoleum
Friday 4th July: Tour Edinburgh, or a location of your choice
Saturday 5th July: Clan Muster at Drumlanrig Castle, with an opportunity to visit Morton Castle and the Queensberry Tomb.

On Sunday 6th July, we will be in Stirling, where a Kirkin o' the Tartan church service is planned. We will march with banners flying from the Castle to the Kirk. You will then have the opportunity to visit Stirling Castle, The Wallace Monument and the site of the Battle of Bannockburn.
