Dear Friends, CSA Members and Family,

Welcome to our new eNewsletter! We hope you enjoy the updates on the new property in Raynham, the start of this year's growing season and recipes featuring winter cabbage.

Looking forward to sharing next season's harvest with you,

Agricultural Updates:

We have two greenhouse built now at the Raynham Farm, so there will be plenty of fresh greens and herbs ready in earlier spring. Not to mention greenhouse tomatoes come June! This is the time of year when we do a lot of seeding and transplanting into the greenhouses.

Our seed orders have been placed and we will be offering new varieties and crops this year including: peas, green beans and sweet potatoes! See the list of what we grow and our new produce availability chart for more details.

Livestock Updates:

Last to move to the new farm will be our livestock. We care deeply about our animals and try to avoid stressful environments and conditions at all costs. We think they are going to love the new farm and are excited for new chicks and piglets to be born there later this spring.

Pictured below: A rooster, two of our gilts that will have their first litters this spring, and our new large black boar Harold.

Recipes from the Field:

This month we are featuring different recipes with winter cabbage!  Part of the brassica family, cabbage is extremely healthy. It is a good source of beta-carotene, vitamin C, fiber and has been shown to reduce risk of cancer. Cabbage is a staple in many traditional diets, and a favorite at the farm. So much so that we grow five types and fourteen varieties each year!

CSA Updates:

Welcome to new Raynham area CSA members and hello to all current members! We are still selling shares for next year 2014-2015 including spring CSA shares, so please spread the word about Freedom Food Farm's CSA Program!

We will have a farm stand built and ready at Raynham for Spring CSA share pick ups. See the list of current farmers' markets and CSA pickup sites for information on where to get Freedom Food this winter.

Also please check out our new farm brochure and 2014 CSA sign-up sheet for updates on the program, if you haven't already!
Freedom Food Farm is in the News!

Media coverage about the farm move and the development of the farm land in Rhode Island includes a front page article in the Providence Journal this Sunday and a Rhode Island Public Radio story that aired this Monday.

Farm Move Updates:

The farm move is in full swing. We will be moved out of the Johnston farm by the end of this month. In the next two months we will finish physically moving and begin setting up the Raynham farm and building needed farm infrastructure.

To mark the move, we are planning to have a few events this Spring including a seed planting event for families and when the weather is warmer, a community event on the farm.

We will send out details on upcoming events via the newsletter and facebook. Below is information on our first event in Massachusetts:

Seed Planting Family Event at the Raynham Public Library
Saturday, March 8th, 2013 from 10:30-11:30 am

Join Freedom Food Farm for a family event! The event will include: vegetable seed planting, story reading, and other farm themed activities for kids. It is also an opportunity to meet the farmers and learn about the farm which recently relocated to Raynham, MA. All ages welcome!

Please spread the word about this event to anyone that might be interested. We hope to see some of you there!
