User, carer and practitioner involvement in the School's activities

The School has tried to make significant strides in user, carer and practitioner involvement in the adult social care field over the last 5 years. The School's activities featured in NIHR INVOLVE's Winter newsletter on the theme of user involvement in social care research. See pages 6-7.

Understanding dementia through art and literature, 25 February 2014

The School's Director will be chairing a panel discussion involving SSCR Fellow Dr Andrea Capstick and SSCR Senior Fellow Professor Justine Schneider, along with Lord Melvyn Bragg, on 25 February 2014 from 18.30 at LSE. The panel will be reflecting on art and literature and its role in understanding dementia. Book tickets here.
 

RESEARCH

Experiences of physically disabled young adults seeking choice and control over managing their care and support

The transition to adulthood is demanding for any young person. Those with physical disabilities have the added challenge of taking on responsibility for managing their care arrangements. This study by Dr Wendy Mitchell and colleagues at the Social Policy Research Unit, University of York, is exploring the issues and identifing user-endorsed good practice.

MEET

Viv Cooper OBE:
UCPRG Member


Viv is a member of the School's User Carer Practitioner Reference Group. She is carer to her eldest son (now 27) who has severe learning disabilities and behaviour described as challenging.

In 1997, she founded the Challenging Behaviour Foundation charity which developes and provides family-friendly, practical information and resources, and was awarded an OBE in 2012.
