Making Our Mark with Mobile Print Power

One of the goals of WE Bike NYC is to bring together people from different boroughs, professions, ages and languages.  One of the great things about bikes is that when you travel from one place to another you get to experience all the places and people in between and our events provide a common ground for us all to come together!

That is not to say that everyone uses bikes in the same way, or that WE all have the same experience on bicycles.  WE Bike NYC realizes that different groups have different bike needs- that’s why WE have three different programs that target three different communities- women who own their own bikes, moms in our Moms on Wheels initiative, and women who don’t yet have bikes who are fluent in Spanish in our Mujeres en Movimiento initiative.  WE hope to expand to even more communities in 2014. Let us know where you think WE should go next by emailing liz@webikenyc.org.

This past happy hour was a rare experience where all these groups- along with others from the cycling community got together to create something as a community! With the help of Mobile Print Power, WE printed bandannas that include ALL of the WE Bike NYC ladies from our logo and WE did so with help from women from all three of our programs! Across boroughs, language boundaries and through some not-quite-ideal weather, WE had a great time and made some cool stuff!

WE can't thank Mobile Print Power enough for bringing their expertise and good times to Red Lantern to hang out with us for a night!
Mobile Print Power is a workshop at Immigrant Movement International in Corona, Queens where participants of all ages learn the useful and adaptable skill of silkscreen printmaking using a mobile printmaking cart. Having learned the printmaking process participants plan and implement mobile print projects around New York City, utilizing the cart and their knowledge of printmaking. So far Mobile Print Power only has a private blog but people can email mobileprintmaking@gmail.com for more information or to be invited to the blog.

Feeling a little sluggish in all this snow? Feeling a little polar vortexed? Come out for a few after-work laps with WE Bike NYC to get your legs going and your heart pumping!
We'll plan to do 3-4 laps, or whatever the group feels comfortable with. We're aiming for a 15 mph pace, but no one will be left behind! (Also Mary will probably still have cross tires on her bike, so don't expect any road tire speed from ya girl.) Please bring lights, a helmet, your winter riding gear and anything else you need for a cold weather workout!

From that first meeting two years ago, to sending off six WE Bike NYC-ers to ride to the National Bike Summit on February 27, WE feel like we've grown tremendously, and want to celebrate in style! We have awesome raffle prizes, giveaways, and cupcakes (it's a birthday party after all) so don't miss this!
Community Events!

WE're biking to DC to go to the National Bike Summit at the end of February, but there are advocacy opportunities for cycling in cities everywhere! This month, join in and attend the third annual Youth Bike Summit, held right here in New York City! Feel like volunteering? Email us for more info: info@webikenyc.org.

Youth Bike Summit
Friday, February 14- Sunday February 16
The New School 66 W 12th St New York, NY

More info and detailed program HERE!
The Youth Bike Summit is an annual three-day national conference bringing together educators, advocates, activists, students, teenagers, practitioners, researchers, policy makers, and community leaders to engage around youth, bicycles, education, and advocacy. We bring people together from different disciplines and backgrounds to network, learn, and explore how the bicycle is a catalyst for positive social change.
Youth Bike is an organization that embraces the values of the Youth Bike Summit and fosters our work on a national scale. The structure of this new model more accurately reflects the complexity of our growing movement, its outcomes, and its potential. Youth Bike is a key element in helping to transform the future of national bike advocacy as it takes the necessary steps toward becoming a more accessible, inclusive movement.
