Although it may not feel like it in New York City, spring is just 17 days away, and Garden volunteers are hard at work planning for warmer weather:
• Setting the groundwork for our first season-long gardening project Bees, Butterflies & Worms,
• Reaching out to and inviting neighbors and local community groups to use the Garden,
• Programming events and performances and
• Working to establish an independent non-profit organization.
It's a tall order, and we need your participation. The more Garden Greeters who volunteer, the longer we can keep the gates open daily. Please reach out to your friends and neighbors, and encourage them to join us. If you are a member of a local community organization that is interested in providing programming in the Garden, please email us with your suggestions.
Together, with each of us contributing what we can, we will create the Garden that serves our community best.

BEES, BUTTERFLIES & WORMS
Earlier this year, Elizabeth Street Garden submitted two grant applications to the Citizens Committee for New York City to repair and rejuvenate the Garden's raised beds and launch Bees, Butterflies & Worms, a neighborhood-led initiative to educate both children and adults about eco-gardening, habitat creation, urban wildlife and sustainable stewardship.
The project's horticultural activities will be supplemented with hands-on gardening workshops for children and adults that will be scheduled in phases throughout the growing season and led by gardening volunteers and expert practitioners.
We expect to hear back from Citizens Committee beginning this month.

WELCOME, SULLIVAN & CROMWELL
We are delighted that the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell has agreed to act as counsel in connection with the start-up needs of Friends of Elizabeth Street Garden, including incorporating the organization, applying to the Internal Revenue Service for tax-exempt status, completing the necessary filings and qualifications to operate as a charitable organization in New York and assisting with related start-up matters.
We’ll be sure to keep you informed as we work to form an independent non-profit organization and begin to work with the City administration to support our mission of preserving the Elizabeth Street Garden as a unique public green, open space that serves our entire community.
