February is Dental Health Month
Thomas' Tails is celebrating the health of your pets mouth!
Oral hygiene is often overlooked but is certainly an important factor in your pet's health. Research has shown that 68% of cats and 78% of dogs three and older are suffering from some form of periodontal disease. The dangers of dental disease is that plaque builds up on the teeth and turns into tartar. These areas grow bacteria and eat away at the teeth and gums. The bacteria not only can cause disease in the mouth, but can also affect other parts of the body, like the heart and kidneys. Catching teeth problems early on will help avoid some dental disease and health challenges.
How can we help our pet's? Glad you asked! Start early in your pet's life. There are certainly some easy steps you can take in helping your pet maintain a healthy mouth.
Feed a species appropriate diet. If you are uncertain about an appropriate diet for your dog or cat, come on in! We will be happy to talk to you about your options for feeding for a healthy mouth.
Offer high quality chews! Chews don't just satisfy the natural desire to chomp, it helps in scraping away soft tartar. Ask our staff at Thomas' Tails which chew would be best suited for you pet.
Daily teeth brushing if possible. Get your pet used to having their teeth brushed. Start with your finger by gently massaging the gums. Introduce a finger brush slowly, then you can move on to a tooth brush especially designed for your pet. We have the tools to get this job done at Thomas' Tails.
You may also use products that you add into their drinking water or food. There are many options for your pet. Ask one of our trained Thomas' Tails team to assist you in choosing the correct product for your pet.
When is the last time you looked inside your pet's mouth, yes inspect those pearly whites, the tongue, gumline and the roof of the mouth.
And of course, regular dental exams by your vet may prevent serious health challenges.
