Welcome to Martha Kisling's Creative Watercolor!

There seems to be  lot of cold weather around the country this month so I hope you are staying nice and warm. It has been a busy month here in my studio getting ready for my January workshop, gathering ideas for my weekly classes, preparing for my class on Watercolor Flowers at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center and trying to keep up with my own painting and blogging - such a blessing to spend my days being creative!
Be sure to check out my blog to see past postings and more of my art and you can also subscribe to this newsletter if you haven't already. Check out past newsletters here.

Ok, so I have to admit that I am not really a huge football fan but it has been a VERY exciting season watching Peyton Manning lead the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl and we will definitely be planted in front of the tv this Sunday with lots of snack food cheering them on to a win - Go Broncos!

Collage and Watercolor

I have been painting in watercolor for over twenty years and love everything about the medium but I am still always on the lookout for new things to try - new techniques, different mediums, mixed media, fun colors - you name it and I probably have it in my 'idea file'. My goal is to try something new each month for my Creative Corner!
If I am combining watercolor with collage I usually begin with paint and then add the collage. For this piece I reversed the process and began by collaging different pieces of tissue and rice paper in a cruciform design and then added definition and details with paint.

Weekly Classes
January Flowers

My weekly classes focused on painting flowers for the month of January. Different techniques were explored including wet on wet, painting through tissue and using a slick, gessoed surface. Next month, the emphasis will be on color schemes, complements and analogous colors.

I love painting big, colorful tropical flowers like theses hibiscus. I love when we get to visit our son, Scott, in Vermont where he is in his last year of college. The countryside is beautiful, the trees lush and the covered bridges quaint - great inspiration for my watercolors!
