AWP Conference

The Goal Is Near & Dear to Us

So far, 44% of our members have voted this year, but we need 60% to make a quorum. Please help AWP become a stronger, more modern, and resourceful organization, and join the AWP board, staff, and thousands of already-voted members in support of reforming AWP’s governance. If you have not yet voted this year, please vote now in favor of the following three initiatives: (1) the proposal to adopt new articles of incorporation and bylaws; (2) the ratification of all AWP business to date; and (3) the election of a new representative of our programs in the Northeast and a new representative of the programs in the Southeast. Two candidates, Sheryl St. Germain of Chatham University and Ira Sukrungruang of University of South Florida, are running unopposed, but we still need your vote. All non-student members of AWP are eligible to vote. Please vote now!

#AWP14 Will-Call Registration

Will-call registration for Seattle is now live and will stay open until the last day of the conference, March 1. We recommend using the will-call system to avoid the longer waits expected for attendees registering onsite.

You can pick up your will-call registration at the Unpaid / Will-Call registration kiosks in the Washington State Convention Center. In order to retrieve your will-call badge, you'll need to log in at one of the kiosks, so please have your AWP user account information—the email address and password you use to log in—on hand.

Get Advice for Attending #AWP14!

Preparation is key to making the most out of your conference experience. To begin, check out some of the more than 550 events available to registered attendees. Then search for the date, time, and location of your favorite author signings. To receive emails specific to #AWP14, including updates about the schedule and conference tips, make sure you use the confirmation email that was sent to you to link your registration badge to your AWP account. If you purchased your own registration, your badge should be linked automatically. Sign into your account and check your badge on your Conference Registration Management page.

Enter the AWP Award Series

Enter your manuscripts in the AWP Award Series. We are at the mid-point now and you have a month left to enter via Submittable. Just log in and load—it is as easy as that! Visit our website for guidelines and details.

Enter the WC&C Scholarship Competition!

Each year, AWP offers two scholarships of $500 each to emerging writers of fiction and poetry who wish to attend a writers' conference, center, retreat, festival, or residency. AWP maintains a comprehensive list of these events and opportunities in our Directory of Conferences & Centers. Winners and four finalists will also receive a one-year individual AWP membership. Enter via Submittable now through March 30, 2014.

Your Job Search

If you applied for positions during the Fall job rush, let us know how your search went and how Career Services may better serve you in 2014. If you have found a new position, please let us know so we can add your name to our ever-growing list of successful applicants!

Submit Your Awesome Bookmash

Bookmash poetry is a fun exercise in creativity. Visit Stan Carey's blog for examples, then send us your own bookmash picture with a list of the titles, authors, and the poem it forms to bookfair@awpwriter.org. We'll post it on the Bookfair Facebook page and on AWP's Pinterest board.

Liberal Arts Majors Succeed In the Job Market

The Association of American Colleges and Universities has just published a report on how well liberal arts majors fare in the job market after graduation. The report's findings are a good antidote to assumptions underlying the dominance of STEM in academic policy making and investment. If you direct or teach in an undergraduate creative writing program, we recommend you study the findings.
