Feb 2014 Newsletter

Happy New Year! Okay - I know it's February, but since this is the first newsletter of 2014 I thought I'd suggest one New Year's resolution that you can keep: why not attend an RLSS A&NW event during the next twelve months? They're a great way to meet other local lifesavers and try some new lifesaving skills. And what better way to start than by signing up for one of the great events featured in this month's newsletter! I'm planning to attend all of these events - so if you're going too, please come over and introduce yourself! It's always a pleasure to meet A&NW lifesavers.

FREE Club Support Workshop - 16 Feb 2014
To support the great work that our Lifesaving Instructors and Tutors are doing in the delivery of the lifesaving awards, RLSS UK is running a range of free support and development workshops throughout 2014 (including an event in Bristol on 16 Feb).

The workshops will be available to all Instructors and will focus on the delivery of the Survive & Save Programme, although a wide range of club related topics will also be covered. The workshops will provide the opportunity to come together with other RLSS UK Instructors and staff to receive relevant information and new resources, and to discuss the issues that are important to YOU!

FREE Lifesaving Leadership Conference - 23 Feb 2014
The British Universities Lifesaving Clubs Association is holding a conference in Birmingham on 23 Feb 2014. High profile speakers will give lectures on improving your lifesaving sport coaching and techniques, building up a lifesaving club and contributing to the local community. There will be an opportunity to network with the speakers and with other clubs to discuss best practice and exchange ideas.

Competitions
There are two competitions coming up which may be of interest to local lifesavers. The first event is the Birmingham University Competition held on 22 Feb 2014. This is followed by the National Student Championships on 15th & 16th March. You don't have to be a student to take part - both events are open to lifesavers from community clubs.

See www.bulsca.co.uk for full details or contact avon@rlsswest.org.uk if you'd like to know more.
Incident Training Evening
To avoid clashing with the RLSS Club Support workshop, we've decided to slip the incident training evening to March (we'll announce the exact date on www.rlsswest.org.uk soon). Pit your wits against six incidents in quick succession, and receive feedback from experienced judges. Individuals and teams are welcome! Please contact avon@rlsswest.org.uk to register your interest.

AGM Minutes
The minutes of the RLSS A&NW AGM 2013 are now available on our website: http://rlsswest.org.uk/anw-agm-2013/

Youth Development Officer
RLSS A&NW is pleased to welcome Pamela Roy, from Bath Uni LSC, as our new Youth Development Officer. Pamela's role is to support young lifesavers aged 8-25 within the branch. If you'd like to get in touch with Pamela to discuss how she can help you, please contact avon@rlsswest.org.uk

Local Projects
The A&NW branch has a list of drowning prevention projects which we'd like to kick off in the New Year. These projects will all directly benefit lifesavers and communities in the A&NW branch. Unfortunately, we haven't got sufficient volunteers to run all of the projects. Most of them only require a short-term commitment and a few hours effort each week. If you'd like to help out, please take a look at the list of projects and contact david@rlsswest.org.uk if you'd like to help.

Social Media - Can YOU Help?
The RLSS West Region is looking for volunteers to help run the Facebook Page, Twitter Account and Website. If you would like to help, please contact
avon@rlsswest.org.uk - full training will be provided.
