Announcing our Spring Workshop Series

We are thrilled to have a new workshop series available this spring! Tobias Atkinson, an experienced woodworker and shop teacher-in-training, will be facilitating our upcoming workshops. The Vancouver Hack Space (VHS) has generously offered to host our workshops at their indoor location, 270 E. 1st Avenue; this is the perfect opportunity for VTL members to see what the VHS has to offer. Here is what we have coming up for March and April: Pre-registration is required for all workshops and can be done online at the links above or in the shop. Secure your spot today!

Shop Open Wednesdays Starting March 5th

You asked, we answered! The VTL shop will now be open five days a week. Our November 2013 member survey results indicated a strong interest in expanded shop hours. In response, we'll be open an additional day each week: Wednesday evenings from 4-8pm. Being open an additional day each week also means we are looking for some extra hands to help run the shop. Shop volunteers are asked to commit to a shift twice per month. All volunteers will be fully trained and have the opportunity to be involved in a community of makers and builders through free workshops, in-shop interaction, and events. No tool experience is necessary but it will be gained! Interested in volunteering? Submit an intake form and we'll be in touch soon.

Seedy Saturday in Kensington-Cedar Cottage: March 1st

Planning to have a garden this year? You'll need seeds!  The Cedar Cottage Food Network and the Kensington branch of the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) are hosting a Seedy Saturday event on March 1st from 10am-12pm at the library (1428 Cedar Cottage Mews, near Knight and Kingsway). In fact, this is the grand opening of the Kensington-Cedar Cottage Seed Sharing Library, which will live at this VPL location. Gardeners, both green and seasoned, are invited to take home seeds, swap ones they've saved, and trade advice with others in the neighbourhood. The event is free and open to all ages. The VTL is proud to have contributed to this event by making the seed library storage unit itself. Labour was generously donated by Brandon Cotter, Max Battison, and Lauren Warbeck.

Tool Wish List

Our members often request tools that we have not yet acquired but, rest assured, we keep track of these tools on our wish list. The top three requests from this month? 1) floor sander; 2) food dehydrator; and 3) carpet cleaner. If you would like to donate one of these tools or can think of another tool you'd like to see on our shelves, please fill out our Tool Inventory Feedback Form

Are You Due to Renew?

Have your Annual Maintenance Fees expired? OH NOES! This $45 ($30 for students/low-income) fee contributes directly to the operations of our co-op by allowing us to purchase new tools, refill our supply of consumables (saw blades, sandpaper, etc.), and give honorariums to our wonderful workshop instructors, among other things. Renewing is a great way to invest in your own creativity and skill development and, by extension, the Tool Library and our community as a whole.

'Wake Up and Make It' Radio Show

Tune into Vancouver Co-op Radio (100.5 FM) on March 1st starting at 7am to hear VTL board members and volunteers featured on a special two-hour show. Set your alarms so you don't miss answers to tool-related questions, stories of home renovations, and our favourite tool-themed tunes. Have a question or song request? E-mail us now!
