Eugene Rogan, Fellow of the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College, University of Oxford speaking on
"Letters from the Ottoman Front: Arab and Turkish Soldiers’ Accounts of the First World War"
Monday, March 10, 2014, 12:30 - 1:45 pm, 307 Tier Building
    The First World War shaped the modern Middle East, though the experience of Arab and Turkish soldiers in that conflict remain one of the least studied aspects of the war.  In this lecture, Oxford historian Eugene Rogan draws on the diaries and letters of common soldiers to provide a sense of life in the Ottoman trenches – in Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, Palestine and Syria.

Note: Mary Horoydski’s planned colloquium on February 28th will be postponed. Details of a new date will be provided later in the year.
HISTORY DEPARTMENT NEWS
Henry Heller’s 2011 book The Birth of Capitalism: A 21st Century Perspective, (New York: Pluto Press, 2011) is soon to be published in Turkish by Izdusum Publications.
 
Henry will also have an article, ‘Marx’s Capital as History,’ published this March in International Critical Thought, a new journal published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The award of $2,000 is offered to support the work of a scholar engaged in some area of bibliographical research, including textual studies and publishing history and with a particular emphasis on Canada. The Fellowship is open only to members of the Bibliographical Society of Canada.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Public History Prize
The Canadian Committee on Public History invites nominations for the 4th annual Public History Prize, to be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Historical Association in St. Catharines. Works in public history completed in 2013 are eligible for consideration and may include: books (monographs, edited collections of essays, or published works of comparable scope); exhibitions and/or exhibition catalogues; documentary films; web sites; and other products representing scholarship in the field of public history.
Deadline: March 4


Strata, the University of Ottawa Graduate Student History Review seeks submissions on all historical topics and eras for the upcoming issue. Strata is an online, bilingual, peer-reviewed graduate student journal that provides a forum for open debate among graduate-level historians which fosters the development of professional skills through the publishing process.
