Plug Into Nature - March 2014Preserves Activities Volunteer
The coming of Spring means lots of new beginnings at Midpen.  The Board of Directors has voted to move forward with a June 3, 2014, bond measure to fund current and future projects of high priority.  Demolition is complete at Mount Umunhum--which allows us to create a safe space for some special birds, and at long last the new staging area has opened at El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve.  This month's FREE outdoor activities include lots of wildflower hikes through the Preserves.

Bond MeasureUpcoming Funding Measure

On February 26, the Midpen Board of Directors voted unanimously to place a general obligation bond measure on the June 3, 2014 ballot. The decision came after a long public process to help shape the direction and priorities of the District into the future. The resulting vision plan reflects the public’s priorities to expand, enhance, and connect regional trails and open space areas, to preserve open space, and to complete restoration projects.

The measure requires a two-thirds vote in Midpen’s jurisdiction across San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and a portion of unincorporated Santa Cruz County.

Purple Martin BoxesA Room with a View

Last month, Midpen volunteers installed special nest boxes for the Purple Martin (Progne subsis) at the summit of Mount Umunhum.  During the course of the District's work on the mountain, the birds--long thought to be absent from the area--were discovered.

The Mount Umunhum project is an excellent example of the capacity of Midpen to carry out all three parts of our mission statement in one project: to preserve open space, to protect and restore the natural environment, and to provide opportunities for ecologically sensitive public enjoyment and education.

As Spring begins, many of our docent-led hikes are on the lookout for wildflowers in the Preserves.  Hopefully the recent rains will help Midpen's flora florish and there will be fields of flowers for you to enjoy!
