SEEDS' All Stars
Katiannah Moise
Scholars '10
Westtown School '14

Katiannah recently earned a place on the Academic Distinction List at Westtown School. Next month, Katiannah will be traveling to Ghana where she will teach genetics and heredity to middle school students at Heritage Academy. When she is not teaching, Katiannah will be conducting research with her advisor on racial and ethnic identities in Ghana on Africans and the diaspora.

What classes are you taking as a senior at Westtown?
I am taking Calculus I, Applied Music in Guitar, Liberation Theology, French 5, Page to Stage and Biology 2 Advanced. I love Liberation Theology because it is
much more than a history and religion course. It is a discussion-based class that prompts its students to think about the global world and its problems. Right now, we are looking at how Liberation Theology, and to an extent, how leaders have influenced or been influenced by religion to participate in direct action for political reform.

What do you hope to study next year in college?
I hope to study Biology. It is my favorite subject because I love to research and learn things in the field. In addition, I hope to take some religion and sociology courses continuing with the education that I have received at Westtown about social change.

How did SEEDS prepare you for Westtown?
SEEDS prepared me to deal with a lot of coursework and projects. I am also really grateful that I was able to experience the boarding school lifestyle in the Scholars Program because I was able to get used to being away from my family.

How would you sum up your time at Westtown?
I really love my school. I can study many interesting courses that could not be found in other high schools, and I have met a lot of people who are my closest friends even though we do not have much in common. I have learned to become more outgoing and open because of my time at Westtown.

Programs Recap
On January 4, Young Scholars participated in the first Brown Bag Lunch Session of the semester (pictured left) at Newark Academy where they discussed "Staying Motivated" with YSP alumni Terryl Wilson (YSP '10, Fay School '13, Berkshire School '16) and Kika Weirich-Freiberg (YSP '10, Fay School '17). Young Scholars also engaged in their first book club session (pictured below left) with YSP alumni and middle and high school aged volunteers on January 8. Girls read The City of Ember (Jeanna DuPrau) and boys read Game (Walter Dean Myers).
SEEDS Scholars had their annual "Welcome Back" day at The Pingry School on January 4. It was the first time that Scholars from all three sites had class together since July. Over the past few weeks, Scholars at each site received visits from alumni to discuss the transition to selective schools across the country. The first panel took place at Dwight-Englewood School on February 8 (pictured above right). Alumni visited Scholars at The Pingry School and Seton Hall Prep on February 22.
On January 4, SEEDS' College Preparatory Program hosted its first annual
homecoming event for graduates (pictured right). Nineteen alumni visited current CPP students at Orange High School to share their college experiences and participate in a series of workshops focusing on academics, campus involvement and college lifestyle.
SEEDS' Guidance Department recently launched a blog for SEEDS alumni. The blog offers weekly high school and college guidance, including tips on college applications, internship opportunities, standardized test scores, interviews and more. Guidance officers will continue visits to graduates at placement schools across the country, as well as hosting other networking and social events. On January 16, CPP alumni met to catch up over bowling (pictured above left).
Guidance worked closely with SEEDS' Alumni office to organize the annual Alumni Holiday Spectacular (pictured above), held December 27 at Skylark on the Hudson. More than 180 SEEDS graduates in high school and college, as well as post-college alumni attended the event. While there, SEEDS' Alumni Alliance launched its 2nd Annual Alumni Matching Gift Challenge
