Precision Manufacturing at the Speed of Today’s Business World

In the manufacturing world it is often said that there are three metrics: quality, speed, and precision (tolerance). Typically you pick the metric most important to you and then pay through the nose to accomplish the other two.

You don’t have to choose one metric above another. It is possible to balance speed-to-market with high quality precision engineered parts. Harbec’s Quick Manufacturing Solutions (QMS) is our own proprietary method of supplying customers with high quality, short-to-medium run plastic parts in any material and design, and with a focus on speed-to-market.

Harbec's speed to market solution queueTo achieve multiple objectives we work closely with our customers to focus on solutions while “managing the queue”. What many customers are delighted to discover about Harbec is that our business has three unique but interrelated units: (1) models and prototypes, (2) precision molds and tools, and (3) production injection molding. As a business with all of the right tools, processes, and expertly trained people, we help our customers achieve speed-to-market through our QMS and in-house capabilities. You don’t have to wait for the transfer or transport of designs, models, molds or parts.

Our February and March newsletter and blog feature capabilities for achieving speed, precision, and quality. This month we point to our capabilities in model making and rapid prototypes. Next month we will feature insight into our flexible mold making and ability to reduce cycle time for production injection molding. All of this adds up to precious seconds, minutes, hours, and days that translate into tangible value to the  bottom-line.

Did you know?

3D printing has been receiving a lot of attention lately.  Many people are under the impression that it is a brand new technology,  just now being introduced to manufacturing, when in fact we purchased our first 3D printer, for printing scale prototypes, in 1996.  Today we have four 3D printers which utilize a variety of materials from ABS to Stainless Steel.  The system supporting the Mold Department is the EOS M270 Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) machine.  Using this 3D printer we produce hand loads, inserts and mold cavities in a variety of metals with tolerances acceptable for most molded parts.  An additional benefit to this new technology is the ability to add conformal cooling lines that follow the cavity impression for precise cooling, and uniform mold temperatures, which allows for shorter cycle times and molded parts with reduced internal stresses.  We have many customer success stories associated with DMLS.  3D printings is expanding the possibilities for manufacturing every day and as new materials and machines are being developed to improve the technology.  We continue to grow with these developments and will be investing in the most current technology again in 2014 as we grow our 3D printing capabilities even further.
Results in Rapid Prototyping

Check-out our QMS solutions at work. Our project collaboration with Kappius Components utilized DMLS capabilities using EOS M270 additive manufacturing machine to produce prototypes that were otherwise impossible. Harbec’s expertise in model making and rapid prototyping supported by our internal QMS and disciplined approach to “managing the queue” have supported our customers goals for speed-to-market and competitive advantage.
