Upcoming Events

AFSC will host two webinars in the coming weeks:

What do Forest Fires, Caribou, and Monster Truck Tires have in Common? by Matt Nolan of the Water & Environmental Research Center at UAF. Tues, Feb 25, 10:00 am AK time. Register for this webinar.
Matt will share results from his recent airborne DSLR photogrammetry campaigns throughout the Alaskan Arctic and the Fairbanks area. Compared to LIDAR, the low cost of DSLR photogrammetry means that it is now affordable to make time-series of high-resolution maps, and such time-series open up many new possibilities for analyzing and understanding changes in the environment. How could these new capabilities help fire managers and researchers? More information.

2013 Alaska Fire Modeling Lessons Learned and Review, with Lisa Saperstein, USFWS, Brian Sorbel, NPS, and Robert Ziel, DOF. Wed, Mar 5, 10:00 am AK time. Register for this webinar.
This is the first in a series of 3 webinars planned by the Alaska Fire Modeling and Analysis Committee for this spring. This presentation will take a look back at some of the modeling work that occurred in
2013, specifically focused on lessons learned that can be carried forward into 2014. Target audience is Alaska fire modelers or anyone with an interest in fire modeling in Alaska. If that includes you, be sure the FMAC knows you are interested by joining their list.

Spring Plans

Mark your calendar for these AFSC events in April, in association with the Spring IMT/FMO meeting in Fairbanks (March 31-April 4)

Alaska Spring Fire Science Workshop
Everyone is welcome to join us for AFSC's open workshop, Wednesday, April 2, in the afternoon. A detailed agenda will be available in the near future. Workshop presentations will be available on the AFSC website and remote access by phone will be provided.

AFSC will also host 2 free public lectures that week at Morris Thompson Center:
Randi Jandt, AFSC Fire Ecologist
Fire ecology under the midnight sun
Tuesday, April 1, 7 pm

Jeremy Littell, Alaska Climate Science Center
Smokey Bear and Prometheus fistfight in heaven: the past, present, and future of fire and climate
Wednesday, April 2, 7 pm

A dessert reception will follow each lecture. Presentations will be recorded and available for later viewing on the AFSC website.

Please email AFSC coordinator Alison York with questions.

New Resources
Download a new research brief:  Fire Severity Filters Regeneration Traits to Shape Community Assembly in Alaska’s Boreal Forest. A recent paper by Hollingsworth et al. (2013) proposes that fire severity and a plant’s intrinsic regeneration strategy are key determinants in post-fire community recovery.

Watch ACCAP's January webinar recording: The North Slope Decision Support System: Multi-stakeholder Ice Road Planning under Climate Change by Bill Schnabel and Steve Bourne. The title doesn't sound relevant, does it? But this webinar discusses hydrological and other data resources available to end-users on the North Slope. Maybe fire managers will need those more often in coming years!
AK DOF seeks your input
...for direction on a multi-year project that the DOF Information Office is coordinating to create statewide wildland fire-related public service announcements and an Alaska Firewise webpage. Please provide feedback here  so that they may consider your priorities for messaging. This must be taken by close-of-business on Feb. 19, 2014. Please share with anyone who you think may have interest in providing feedback.
