This is an update on the European drugs summer school (EDSS) organised by the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) in cooperation with the EU drugs agency (EMCDDA).

Apply for scholarships and early bird fee until 15 March

This year, students may apply for scholarships and take advantage of early bird reductions until 15 March. Don't miss the deadline! Candidates who enrol during the first registration phase for the third European summer school on ‘Illicit drugs in Europe: demand, supply and public policies’ (EDSS) will get a reduction of 100 EUR (total fee 700 EUR). In addition, scholarships may be awarded to eligible students (50 % fee reduction) on the basis of merit, travel costs and GDP of the candidate's country of residence.

The EDSS 2014 will take place in Lisbon from 30 June to 11 July. During the two-week programme, renowned keynote speakers, EMCDDA scientific experts, ISCTE professors and policymakers will give participants the information they need in order to meet the complex policy challenges of the European drug situation.

Keynote speakers

Prof. Robert West (University College London and editor-in-chief of the journal Addiction) and Prof. Susan Michie from University College London have confirmed their attendance as keynote speakers at EDSS. They will talk about various aspects of addiction.

Social programme

A welcome reception at the first day of the EDSS will provide students with the perfect opportunity not only to get to know each other but also to meet many of the EDSS lecturers. Additional social events (such as visits to famous sites close to Lisbon) may be organised outside the programme if enough students are interested.

Case study: Portugal

Portuguese drug policy has attracted significant attention during the past decade in the media and in policy debates. Students will have several opportunities to learn more about Portuguese drug policy (study visits and a debate involving some of the main actors and experts on the subject) during the course.
