Register Now for CFE Open House and Website Launch Party on 2/21

In honor of National Entrepreneurship Week, the Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting an Open House and New Website Launch Party on Friday, February 21 at 3:00 p.m. in 1-211 Carol Simon Hall. Guests will learn what entrepreneurship at the University of Rochester is all about, have a chance to submit ideas for programming, contribute their own definitions of entrepreneurship, and enjoy appetizers and giveaways.. Attendees must register online or call 276-3500.


Polyphonic.org Free Webinar for Musicians on 2/17

Polyphonic.org, an initiative of the Institute for Music Leadership at the Eastman School of Music, is presenting a series of free webinars for musicians this spring. The first webinar is titled, "Lessons Without Borders: Teaching Music in a Virtual World" and will be held on Monday, February 17 from 8 to 9 p.m.  Two professionals will share their stories, strategies, and ideas and answer questions from the audience in a live Q&A session at the end of the webinar. Read more and register for free online.


KEY Program Info Session: 2/18

Learn about the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) program at an information session Tuesday, February 18 at 4 p.m. in Lattimore 306A. The program offers select students a fifth, tuition-free year of college to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. The program is supported by the College and the Center for Entrepreneurship. The last information session of the semester will be held Monday, February 24; or you may schedule an appointment with KEY program coordinator Liz Monte to learn more. The spring application deadline is Thursday, March 20.


Entrepreneur Lecture Featuring Richard Glaser: 2/20

Richard Glaser, Director of Innovocracy and Founder of Rochester CFO and RochesterGrowth, will give a talk called “Starting Your Own Business, Venture Capital and Angel Investors” at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 20 in Hoyt Auditorium. The event was organized by Chi Phi. Registration is not required.


Register Now for Second Mark Ain Business Model Workshop: 2/25

The 2014 Mark Ain Business Model Workshop Series continues with “Developing a Business Plan,” a presentation by Dennis Kessler, Edward J. and Agnes V. Ackley Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship, Simon School and Co-Owner, Kessler Restaurants, LLC. The second workshop will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, in Gleason Hall 318/418. Workshops are free and open to all members of the University and the general public. The competition (submissions are due in April) is open to currently enrolled University students at any level of study. Food and refreshments will be provided at each workshop. Attendees must register online or call 276-3500.


LivePlan and Competitor's Guide Available for Mark Ain Business Model Competition Entrants

For University of Rochester students who intend to compete in the 2014 Mark Ain Business Model Competition, team leaders should contact cfe@rochester.edu to receive a unique promo code for a free 6-month license to LivePlan, online business plan software. You will need to provide your name, company name, and email address. Additionally, the competitor’s guide is now available to download, or pick up a hard copy at the Center for Entrepreneurship, 1-211 Carol Simon Hall.


All College Students: Enter the NYBPC Finger Lakes Region Contest

The Finger Lakes Regional Contest of the New York State Business Plan Competition, an intercollegiate business plan competition, is accepting applications now through Sunday, March 9, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. Students are invited to submit to one of the following six categories:

  • Biotechnology / Healthcare

  • Energy / Sustainability

  • Information Technology / Software

  • Nanotechnology / Advanced Technology

  • Products / Services

  • Social Entrepreneurship / Non-Profit

A two-page written application is all that is required to enter (a full business plan is not necessary). Regional semi-finalists will be invited to the presentation round at the University of Rochester on Wednesday, April 9. Winners from this round will go head-to-head with finalists from nine other regions for $500,000 in cash and in-kind prizes at the statewide competition on Friday, April 25 at the University at Albany. The competition is open to currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students. Download the application and visit the web page for more information and complete rules. There is no fee to enter. UR Students: Apply to the Student Incubator

The University of Rochester has opened student incubator space at High Tech Rochester, made possible by Simon alumnus Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA). Student Incubator companies will have access to all client amenities within the HTR Lennox Tech Enterprise Center, as well as access to High Tech Rochester’s Director of New Ventures and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who can provide additional coaching, mentoring, and connections. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; Rochester students at any level of study can apply. The incubator is accessible on the bus loop.
