Why should parents be involved in the college completion process?

  • 476:1 is the average ratio of U.S. high school students per guidance counselor. Minnesota’s student to counselor ratio is 800:1.
  • U.S. public high school students receive average of 38 minutes of personal advising on college admission.
  • 1 in 3 college students transfer schools, often adding time and losing credits in the process.
  • College is the 2nd largest investment most students will make (a home is first).
  • Student loan debt has exceeded our nation’s credit card debt.

RESULTS: A person’s adult lifestyle is shaped by the financial choices they make as a teen. On a personal note: My 21-year old is interning in Washington DC this semester. He commented that a colleague he recently took to lunch (networking!) shared that even though she is employed full-time, she still needs her parents to subsidized her income. Parents, your student's college debt can affect you as well for years to come.

IDEAS to Break the Mold:

  • Have conversations with your students early (middle school) about careers, pathways, and life goals. Help them to make the connection between being a student now, but an adult in a few short years.
  • Maximize your student's affordable college credit options in high school.
  • Understand the credit transfer process before your student enrolls in Dual Enrollment classes (often 11th grade).
  • You are your student's best college/career coach. Don't think you have to know everything, but partner with him/her and enjoy the process of planning together.

In the News ~
  • Just Announced - Adults can now earn a two-Year Business Degree through Thomas Edison State College with the help of free, open, online courses from Saylor.org.
  • On January 1, a new policy from the College Board requires CLEP test-takers to register for their exams online after creating an online account at CollegeBoard.org. This created an issue for students who are under 13 because federal policies prohibit students under the age of 13 from having internet accounts. The College Board is working to allow an exception form that would include a parent signature to allow young students to have an account. The new policy will be released as soon as it clears all committees.
  • If your student is considering Dual Enrollment (PSEO) next year, some colleges set April 1 as a deadline to register. Don't delay checking into your options. If you would like help understanding PSEO, which courses are best to register for, and how to complete General Education requirements in 10 classes or less, consider scheduling an appointment with me.

Resources ~
  • Just Released! Introduction to Psychology Course Guide. This 100+ page Course-for-Credit Guide is a full-year curriculum that introduces students to the scientific study of psychology – an engaging course, often offered in both high school and as a college general education course. This Course Guide is age-appropriate for high school students plus includes an optional component of guided CLEP exam prep. Why a Psychology Course Guide?  Our goal is to inspire students to want to learn about psychology and encourage them to ask: “What’s the evidence?” when encountering statements about human behavior. Students often find this information is applicable in their everyday lives and can be applied to a broad range of career fields. The difficulty educators find is the lack of age-appropriate material written from a Biblical perspective. We decided to solve that.
  • Is the degree/certification your student considering worth it? California Community Colleges has published some pretty interesting numbers: SALARY of recent grads and the DEGREE/certificate they graduated with. Check out Engineering and Health Science numbers. Some two-year degrees lead to great paying careers!
  • Before your teens head into their first interview, have them watch this 23 minute TED video ... at minute 13 they will learn a strategy that can help them gain significant confidence going in.
