Tenor Saxophone Concerto

The BBC Philharmonic continues its season's journey along 'The Mancunian Way' with a programme that includes music by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Gary Carpenter James MacMillan and HK Gruber .

With this special BBC Radio 3 commission HK Gruber conducts the first ever performance of Gary Carpenter's new tenor saxophone concerto SET .

Iain Ballamy is internationally acclaimed as ‘an ingenious jazz innovator’ with a career spanning nearly 30 years, he has led and collaborated with some of the finest players around including; the highly influential Loose Tubes, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, Hermeto Pascoal, Django Bates, Kenny Werner & Gil Evans just to name a few.

 

Gary Carpenter’s witty and dramatic writing style has featured in numerous films and TV programmes as well as in the opera house and concert hall.

Recent works include: The Listening Project Symphony [BBCPO, Salford 2012 - possibly the first symphony to receive its premiere ‘live’ on BBC Radio 4!] , Fred and Ginger [LSO/Daniel Harding: London, February 2011] , Bassoon Concerto [Alan Pendlebury/RLPO/Vasily Petrenko: Liverpool, November 2011] . Gary is Visiting Professor In Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music and Professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 at 19.30
