Welcome to the February Newsletter 2014

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the February edition of the King's College Newsletter, where I hope you will enjoy reading about the many activities and good works of our pupils.

You will see that February was a very busy month, with many extra-curricular activities going on, as well as the normal learning activities. Pupils have been involved in charity works, which you can see in the article on Nyumbani. They have also taken part in various house competitions, including Debating and Rugby.

The first week of February saw us welcoming an inspection team from ISI, the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the body which inspects the majority of independent schools in the UK and also British Schools Overseas. A team of nine inspectors spent four days looking at every aspect of the school, and I am delighted to report that we have passed all the regulatory requirements for BSO accreditation (accreditation by the British government). The full report will be available in a few weeks time, and will be published in full on our website.

As this is my final newsletter as Headteacher of King's College, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all pupils, teachers and parents who work so hard every day to make the school such a successful and enjoyable place for our children. I wish the whole school community the very best for the future.

Best regards

Elaine Blaus
Headteacher.

Whole School

Huge Thanks from Nyumbani

All of us at Nyumbani children's home in Kenya want to say a really big “Asante Sana” to the staff, parents and children of King's College for always remembering us. What a fabulous sum you raised at the ‘Mighty Merienda’. Thank you all.

Please notice Sharon's new party dress which was a donation from Spain. She was so proud of herself and looked simply stunning. When she came to us she was such a sick little girl, runny nose and constant cough, and look at her now. I can hardly believe the sparkle in her eyes - you, everyone at King's, helped do that.

Safer Internet Day 2014

Around the world on the 11th February 2014, schools and other public sectors celebrated Safer Internet Day. A day where we can all be reminded to, 'Think Before You Click'.

Children have online access more than ever within a huge range of spaces. School, home, shopping centres and restaurants are literally buzzing with high speed wifi internet portals. It is therefore imperative that our students are equipped with the maturity to be able to cope with using this immense gateway to the world.

Unfortunately, over the last 20 years, since the internet was created, there have been a number of incidents that may have been avoided with some internet safety training.

Safer Internet Day (SID) has the purpose of promoting safe and informed use of the internet around the world. Children need to know which avenues they are to go down should they feel uncomfortable viewing something online.

Last year, at King´s College Soto de Viñuelas, the junior pupils enjoyed a day which was packed full of engaging activities which encouraged the safe use of the internet. This was well complemented by a speaker who came in to deliver an assembly on the subject of internet safety.

This year we went one step further and provided an internet safety session in Key Stage One which took the form of an interactive story and discussion. The juniors enjoyed a lesson on safe internet use in the classroom with the focus of Communication and Email. At the end of the day, all of the junior classes attended an assembly delivered by Mr. Tamblyn (Year 6 Teacher – ICT Coordinator). This covered the evolutionary journey of communication from our ancient past; finishing off with the latest in computer technology.

The assembly was rounded off with some key points about internet safety:

Block IT: Report unwanted emails as Spam or block them
Flag IT: Tell a trusted adult about anything you find online that you do not like
Zip IT: Keep your personal login details a secret and only share them with your family

These are points of call the children should take if they encounter something unsuitable online.

"I was very satisfied that the pupils left the assembly understanding how amazing technology can be, but also that it needs to be used in a safe manner. I am confident that the pupils will seek advice from a trusted adult should the need arise." Mr Tamblyn

Of course, internet safety teaching does not just happen for one day of the year at King's College, it is within our overall approach to teaching ICT across the school.

Some pupil reactions:

"I thought that the Safer Internet Day assembly was a great success. I especially liked how everything was explained with great detail".

Ben (Year 6)

"I thought Safer Internet Day was very interesting. The assembly was fun and we learnt a lot of things".

Irene (Year 6)

We look forward to delivering another fun and enlightening day on Tuesday 10th February 2015

Language and Sport: A Winning Combination

King’s College International, part of King’s Group, offers a variety of extra-curricular and study options for children aged 3-18 who are keen to improve their language skills. We have been operating for 30 years and during this time have worked successfully with over 50,000 children, who have partaken in Summer camps, Academic year abroad programmes and Language lessons.

Education and competition are two universal ingredients of any human culture. Children spontaneously seek competition with their equals. They seem to have an innate desire to compare themselves with others in every way, for example, by running. Such a role is incredibly beneficial for the development of a child and therefore suddenly sport becomes the perfect vehicle of motivation.

Sports and language learning represent a winning combination amongst children and teenagers. Language learning should not be confined to the language classrooms, on the contrary; the language should be taught “throughout the medium that it’s normally used”.

Considering these learning benefits, as well as the idea that Spain has emerged as a world leading figure in many sports (football, tennis, cycling, motor racing),  King’s College International embodies this winning combination:  in July 2012  our first group of students participated in the Football Coaching Programme with Real Madrid Foundation. Since then more and more international students, including those from  Colombia, Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Iran, have been keen to improve their sporting and linguistic skills through summer camps offered by King’s College International.

It is believed that Football has become a “global language”. However, there are many other disciplines which are gaining more and more followers every day. The new Davis cup Captain Carlos Moya & Roberto Carretero, both associates of SD Tennis Academy, will be joining our summer school in King’s College Soto de Viñuelas in July 2014.

King’s College International also works with overseas partners specialised in sports. Amongst them the renowned Chris Evert Tennis Academy, Florida, which will not only host our summer amateur players but also those who wish to turn sport into a career or the key for their future.

Chinese New Year in Reception Class

Reception have been busy learning about China and how Chinese New Year is celebrated all around the world.

Seahorse Class were extremely lucky to have Song Ye’s mum bring in some Traditional Chinese clothes to try on, they were very beautiful and well sewn.

The children also learnt about the foods that are eaten during the celebrations, and even tried them for themselves. Song Y showed everybody how to use chopsticks correctly, she made it look easy - when in fact it is extremely tricky.

The children learnt a song that taught them about the Chinese dragon, lanterns, firecrackers and money envelopes that are given to children as gifts.

We learnt some phrases in Chinese and had a go at drumming to the beat of the song. After learning the song everybody teamed together to make a dragon, this was used to dance in for the dragon procession that was performed for the nursery children. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed performing.

Then it was time to learn a story, called ‘Made in China’ and it was all about a butterfly that was sent on a mission to find out what was invented over 2000 years ago in China and is still used today. At the end of the story the butterfly found out that it is paper. The children then got creative - making and decorating their own paper butterflies.

The children then practiced their computer skills using a programme to order the numbers in Chinese. It was a bit of a challenge but the children's mouse control is definitely improving. After which they tried there hand at the difficult task of writing in Chinese, they used thin black brushes and were excellent at copying the shapes correctly.

Bears, bears and more bears

Pre- Nursery have been very busy learning about bears this term.

They have recently started  looking at the story of 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?' The children have enjoyed exploring colour through activities such as painting, matching and sorting.

Next the children learnt all about size whilst reading 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. They acted out the story, made their own bowls using clay, and then painted them using the colours which they had been looking at the week before. They even made some porridge, which everyone tasted afterwards. The Goldilocks song helped them to remember the story.

The children then learnt the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt', and are now able to repeat parts independently. The class then made their own bear hunt journey, travelling through grass, water (river), mud, twigs and pine cones (forest), and snow until finally finding a bear hidden in the 'cave'.  The children even made their own sandwiches by following instructions and making choices.

Year 1 - Busy as Ever

The children in Year 1 have been as busy as ever lately with a packed programme of activities.

Valentine's Day

The children have been making Valentine's Day cards to say thank you to the people who are always kind to them and love them. Liya in the Leopard Class said, "I love my mummy and daddy. They always do nice things for me".

Little Red Riding Hood

This term, the children have been reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood. They have written descriptions of the main characters in the story and also made lists of what Little Red Riding Hood might take in her basket for her grandma. Everyone has learnt to recognise the beginning, middle and end of the story and have acted out the story using role-play.

Gymnastics

In P.E. the children have been doing gymnastics, working together to create simple routines that involve traveling in different ways, they have even learnt how to strike a pose when they finish their gymnastic routine.

Year 2 Study Africa

Year 2 have spent the last few weeks studying Africa, they have been using atlases and information books to find out as much as they can. The internet has also been useful to find pictures and videos about the people of Africa. It is very interesting to find out how other people’s lives are different from ours. Some of the children have been lucky enough to visit parts of Africa and have shared their photographs and experiences with the rest of the year group.

The Children then visited the African Museum in Madrid (El Mundo Negro), where they saw masks, clothes and other things which are commonly used on the continent. They also found out how the cocoa bean was grown how it is later made into chocolate.  Think about that, chocolate comes from a large bean growing on a tree... incredible.

Everyone enjoyed the African drums and the rhythms that they make so we have practiced singing and dancing “Jambo Bwana”, which means “Hello Sir”.

Izabella Hearne, a member of our School Council, came to school to talk to us all about the time she spent working in Nyumbani, Kenya.  This is a home for sick children who have no families to care for them. Year 2 has been raising money through our ‘Mighty Merienda's’, in order to help to buy medicine and other aid for those in need.

The Children of Year 2 have had great time learning about the cultures and traditions of Africa, and look forward to learning about other places around the world too.

A Visit From Shakespeare

As a way of inspiring our potential young playwrights in Years 7 to 10, the English Department recently arranged for the visit of The Pocket Oxford Theatre Company who performed a highly visual, entertaining and interactive shortened version of Romeo and Juliet.

The pupils were mesmerized by the seamless manner in which only two actors managed to play every role through rapid costume changes and the input of volunteers from the audience made the experience all the more fun. The show was a perfect example of how to introduce a young audience to one of Shakespeare’s timeless stories.

House Rugby and House Debating

The House Competition has been fierce in the last few weeks with the House Debating and the House Rugby competitions at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. In the Debating the Shield House stole the show in the Key Stage 3 final against Knight with Victoria S showing depth of research, confidence and fluency in her arguing “why cigarettes should be illegal”. At Key Stage 4 Emily S and Max S from Lion House took no prisoners as they argued in favour of Euthanasia.

In the House Rugby competition there were many excellent performances and the competition proved to be very popular with the crowds.

Johann D, Printorn K, Ignacio M, Alex V all impressed for Lion House while for Knight House Alex E, Fran A, Zhang Y, Andres D, Manuel A and Iñigo M played consistently well.

In the girls Key Stage 4 final the impressive Lion team overwhelmed the Shield House with many outstanding performances from Patricia D, Maria C, Maria C and Emily S.
