From the Headteacher
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the February edition of the King's College Newsletter, where I hope you will enjoy reading about the many activities and good works of our pupils.
You will see that February was a very busy month, with many extra-curricular activities going on, as well as the normal learning activities. Pupils have been involved in charity works, which you can see in the article on Nyumbani. They have also taken part in various house competitions, including Debating and Rugby.
The first week of February saw us welcoming an inspection team from ISI, the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the body which inspects the majority of independent schools in the UK and also British Schools Overseas. A team of nine inspectors spent four days looking at every aspect of the school, and I am delighted to report that we have passed all the regulatory requirements for BSO accreditation (accreditation by the British government). The full report will be available in a few weeks time, and will be published in full on our website.
As this is my final newsletter as Headteacher of King's College, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all pupils, teachers and parents who work so hard every day to make the school such a successful and enjoyable place for our children. I wish the whole school community the very best for the future.
Best regards
Elaine Blaus
Headteacher.

Huge Thanks from Nyumbani
All of us at Nyumbani children's home in Kenya want to say a really big “Asante Sana†to the staff, parents and children of King's College for always remembering us. What a fabulous sum you raised at the ‘Mighty Merienda’. Thank you all.
Izabella and the orphans of Nyumbani
Please notice Sharon's new party dress which was a donation from Spain. She was so proud of herself and looked simply stunning. When she came to us she was such a sick little girl, runny nose and constant cough, and look at her now. I can hardly believe the sparkle in her eyes - you, everyone at King's, helped do that.

Safer Internet Day 2014
Around the world on the 11th February 2014, schools and other public sectors celebrated Safer Internet Day. A day where we can all be reminded to, 'Think Before You Click'.
Children have online access more than ever within a huge range of spaces. School, home, shopping centres and restaurants are literally buzzing with high speed wifi internet portals. It is therefore imperative that our students are equipped with the maturity to be able to cope with using this immense gateway to the world.
Unfortunately, over the last 20 years, since the internet was created, there have been a number of incidents that may have been avoided with some internet safety training.
Safer Internet Day (SID) has the purpose of promoting safe and informed use of the internet around the world. Children need to know which avenues they are to go down should they feel uncomfortable viewing something online.
Last year, at King´s College Soto de Viñuelas, the junior pupils enjoyed a day which was packed full of engaging activities which encouraged the safe use of the internet. This was well complemented by a speaker who came in to deliver an assembly on the subject of internet safety.
This year we went one step further and provided an internet safety session in Key Stage One which took the form of an interactive story and discussion. The juniors enjoyed a lesson on safe internet use in the classroom with the focus of Communication and Email. At the end of the day, all of the junior classes attended an assembly delivered by Mr. Tamblyn (Year 6 Teacher – ICT Coordinator). This covered the evolutionary journey of communication from our ancient past; finishing off with the latest in computer technology.
The assembly was rounded off with some key points about internet safety:
Block IT: Report unwanted emails as Spam or block them
Flag IT: Tell a trusted adult about anything you find online that you do not like
Zip IT: Keep your personal login details a secret and only share them with your family
These are points of call the children should take if they encounter something unsuitable online.
"I was very satisfied that the pupils left the assembly understanding how amazing technology can be, but also that it needs to be used in a safe manner. I am confident that the pupils will seek advice from a trusted adult should the need arise." Mr Tamblyn
Of course, internet safety teaching does not just happen for one day of the year at King's College, it is within our overall approach to teaching ICT across the school.
Some pupil reactions:
"I thought that the Safer Internet Day assembly was a great success. I especially liked how everything was explained with great detail".
Ben (Year 6)
"I thought Safer Internet Day was very interesting. The assembly was fun and we learnt a lot of things".
Irene (Year 6)
We look forward to delivering another fun and enlightening day on Tuesday 10th February 2015
