Welcome to the February Newsletter 2014

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents,

The summer is officially here in Panama, but our thoughts go out to those families and friends in Europe and North America, who are battling with the current storms and bad weather.

Although February is considered the shortest month, at KCP we have had a fantastic and action-packed time. The main two events of the month were:  The Meduca, Embassy and King’s event, with the signing of the new convenio and the official opening of the Training Centre and secondly of course; our Summer Fair. This is the first big summer fair we have held here in Panama. We were keen to adopt the same traditions followed by our sister school located in Spain.  Although we might need a few more years to reach the Madrid "May Fair" standards, this year was certainly a great step in the right direction and appeared to be enjoyed by all in attendance.

This month we have also welcomed four new families to the school and the school community. There have been two "Parent Stop and Learn Mornings", a Maths workshop and the Year 3 visit to the Panama Canal. Whether it is accompanying a school visit, taking part in "Speakers Corner", attending the workshops, or being involved in the Summer Fair; our parents here at King’s College Panama have proved themselves supportive, committed and enthusiastic. I would particularly like to say a big thank you to all our parents who have contributed to supporting the school this month.

Our soccer club is now up and running.  For Rugby, Soccer and Fencing, we are hoping to have some inter-school events. The school choir is growing and we now have over 35 children taking part in Music clubs at lunchtime.

It is amazing to think that February 2012 was the first time I visited Panama and here we are two years on having made such progress. At this time in 2012, the school renovations hadn’t even started yet and we had not enrolled even one family. Two years later the school now has over 170 children, and an amazing learning environment. If this is what can be achieved in two years, the years ahead look incredibly exciting for our school.

Best wishes and I hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter,

Convenio extended for a further five years

On the 11th February King's College sealed the alliance with the Ministry of Education for an additional five year project.

The first convenio was signed in February 2011 and this has been such a success to both the Panamanian schools and also King's College, that it was decided to increase this for an additional five years.

In November last year, we celebrated our first graduation. This year we are working with two Meduca schools and their entire English Departments. With this second group, we have had two contact weeks and two Saturday workshops.

We were delighted that for this special event we were joined by Sir Roger Fry, King's Group Chairman, HMA Dr Ian Collard, British Ambassador and the Minister of Education for Panama Su excelencia Lucy Molinar.

Minister Molinar claimed that she could identify the Meduca teachers who had been on the convention by their British accents.

The event was concluded with the official opening of the school training centre in the Honour of HMA Dr Ian Collard. The whole day was a celebration of the continuing relationship between the British Embassy, Meduca and King's College.

Summer Fun at the Summer Fair

Our first official Summer Fair took place earlier this month. It was a family event with an amazing raffle, bouncy castles, face painting and international foods.

The event was a celebration for the whole school community and an excellent opportunity for the teachers, parents and pupils to mix on an informal basis.

The children from KS2 and KS3 designed games and ran their own section of the Fair. "They were real business entrepreneurs." commented Ms Whay. Several boys in Year 4 ran a lemonade stand, which was a real success, and they are now even thinking of distributing nationally!

KCP would like to thank the Fair Committee who organised the planning and proceedings for the entire day. There was a lot of work leading up to the big event and of course, even harder work demonstrated on the day, but mixed with the right amount of fun and enjoyment.

Ms Whay commented "The staff members really pulled together in a huge team effort, it was a very proud day for the whole school."

Ms Whay received the most votes for ‘soak the teacher’ and ended the day drenched in a bath of ice water.

All of the funds raised from the event will be donated to the ‘Divino Niños Orphanage’. We are aiming to raise enough funds to be able to refurbish and decorate their three school rooms and also purchase curtains and blinds for the children’s bedrooms.

Fundraising is core to the King's College ethos and encouraging our pupils to give back to those less fortunate, is something that we take great pride in.  We were delighted to be able to share the event with 20 children from the home, who all had a very enjoyable time.

The event was officially opened by the Orphanages Director; Marixa Grifo opened the Fair by saying a big thank you to the school, the pupils and their families, adding how incredible it was that children were helping children.

Our initial estimate is that we made approximately $5,000 dollars, what an extraordinary amount - well done and thank you to all of those involved and for making our first fair such an event to remember.

School Trip to The Panama Canal

As part of the Year 3 topic ‘The Panama Canal’, classes recently ventured out on a school trip to the Miraflores Locks.

The day started with the pupils observing and sketching large vessels transiting the canal. They then then watched a 3D Movie, which explained the history and importance of the canal. Following this, the children completed various activities while exploring a variety of exhibitions about: the history of the canal, wildlife in Panama, current operations of the canal and the canal expansion.

Pupils enjoyed a delicious packed lunch made by Chef Eric, while watching different vessels operate up and down the canal. Pupils also had an opportunity to take some memorable photographs on the top viewing gallery, before finally spending some time in the gift shop.

Since the trip, the Year 3 Classes have had two visitors: Ms Rognoni came in and shared information about her job role for The Panama Canal and gave a short presentation to the children about the environmental impact of the canal on the areas and explaining how they are managing these within the expansion.

Our second visitor, Mr Nestor shared his experiences of working for the Maersk Group and explained why the canal is one of the biggest shipping routes in the world. He also educated the pupils as to how goods are distributed from one place to another via their container ships.

The school would like to thank both Ms Rognoni and Mr Nestor for speaking to the children and sharing their knowledge.

Since the visit, pupils have become creative and have been making their own container ship for their long-term homework project.  These will be sailing on The Panama Canal between Dahl Ocean and the Rowling Sea very soon - so watch this space.

Candela from Rowling Class, said, "The trip was fantastic! I couldn’t believe how big the boats were.” James and Pia from Dahl Class shared their excitement of having their parents in the class to talk about their jobs and experiences with the canal.

If you are interested to learn more about the canal you can watch a live web-feed on the Panama Canal official website.
