Project Manager for
Naomi & Stephen’s homes

Sasha Savchenko with
his wife Nadya

You  may not always know what the Lord has in store for your life till you step out
on the ledge of faith that the Lord has
set before you.
Then and only then will He
reveal the big picture.

All He requires is one trusting step.

~
I met Sasha on one of my first trips to Ukraine, I knew him then as the taxi guy. He has always made himself available to folks coming and going from Ukraine. Owning his own private vehicle, he uses it to be a blessing to others but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past two months I have come to know Sasha as one who is passionate about reaching out to the disabled young adults I work with and bringing them to the saving knowledge of Christ through the counsel of parents in a godly home where they can flourish and grow. The pivotal time in January came as each of us understood that God was placing the other together to work on this project. The Lord made it so clear to me that Sasha is the one best qualified although I never would have asked him if he had not shared his desire to serve.

I could not have asked for a man more qualified, though I don’t need to tell you this, his life speaks for itself.

I continue to be amazed how God answers the prayers of His children! Matthew 18:19 says “Again, I say to you that if two of you on earth are in agreement about anything for which you make a request, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.” Christians, through the Soviet era, could not even begin to imagine the freedoms we now have, it was only the answers to the prayers of faithful Christians from many other countries that provided us this freedom.

I was born in 1958 and three years later the Chairman of the Communist Party, Nikitia Khrushchev, stated on public television that “now was the final fight against Christianity.” The promise was made that 10 years later the last remaining Christian would be put on public display on TV. That set my mother’s husband against her and made her make a choice “me, or your God?” He kicked my mother out of the house and us three children with her, so we went to live with my grandparents on another collective farm. In 1962 the chairman of the collective farms called my mother in and said that there were documents stating that she was to be deprived of her parental rights. He told her it was because she could not raise and educate children in the doctrine of Christianity. We were to be moved to an orphanage, but we all prayed together that it would not happen and God answered our prayers. There was persecution and ridicule from that time on, especially later in school. Atheism classes were taught exposing me as stupid and backward, a downtrodden boy calling me names like “devout shtunda-an insult given to Christians in Germany, Devotee and Baptist.”
Later I was in the army and was summoned to the office of the KGB. The representative demanded that I cooperate with them and deliver information about some of the local church members. During the Soviet times Christians were outcasts in society. It started in schools where children were given low scores, Christians were not allowed to study in an institution for a higher education. They had no rights to work as senior officers, they were not given bonuses, they were not paid a full salary or many were even dismissed from their jobs.

In 1981 the Lord gave me a beautiful wife and then two children. In 1993 I was ordained by the church to minister as a deacon. In 1998 God led me to go preach the Gospel in a village and to start a church there. It was not easy to start with the pressure of the Orthodox Church as they would tell people “that church is a sect and you should not go there.” But God was working in people’s hearts and now after 15 years there is a church with its own building. The church congregation and I have had a dream: we should be involved socially in a service project for those who are in need. I have seen how many people need to be taken care of. My desire was to build and organize a nursing home or a “house of mercy” where disadvantaged people can find shelter and peace. Where these people are loved and cared for and the message of God’s love is shared. I have prayed about this for a long time. I had a vision of what this project could look like in my mind. God led me to Alys here in Kherson. She told me about her desires, plans and prayers for Naomi and Stephen’s homes and I told her about mine.

Through this I see again how God answers our prayers when we submit them to him. Then we can accomplish God’s purposes and fulfill His will together as a team.

Sasha has been the Administrator at Tavrechesky Christian Institute(TCI) here in Kherson overseeing every aspect of utilities coming onto the institute property, the documentation for them, making sure they are functioning properly down to the small details of light bulb changes. Maintenance on campus is overseen by him as well as the establishment of new buildings. Fire safety at TCI is under his care. Arrangements for guests on premises as well as the maintenance and kitchen staff and its supply of food have all been under his care. He will slowly be moving out of this position to join me full time to serve as project manager to build and establish Naomi and Stephen’s homes.
We covet your prayers.

NOW IS THE TIME! Join those the Lord is bringing together to establish two new godly family homes for these young hearts.
