Bemidji State building telecom network to link area tribal colleges

A Bemidji State University-led consortium of higher education institutions has won a $500,000 grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture to expand distance learning and telemedicine opportunities for rural residents of northern Minnesota.

The grant will allow schools in the BSU-led Aazhoogan (Bridge) Consortium, which includes Northwest Technical College, Leech Lake Tribal College, Red Lake Nation College and White Earth Tribal and Community College, to build a network of high-definition video connections linking the five institutions.

360° receives grants to expand manufacturing education programs

BSU's 360° Manufacturing and Applied Engineering ATE Regional Center of Excellence will extend manufacturing education to high school students and establish a training program to develop tomorrow’s manufacturing supervisors, thanks to a pair of grants from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

BSU's women’s studies and gender studies programs are recognizing March as Women's History Month with a variety of activities on campus, including panels, open forums, artist meet-and-greets and film screenings.

Faculty and staff have contributed $30,000 to Imagine Tomorrow

Theresa Perreault, tech support analyst in Information Technology Services, is one of the many faculty and staff members at BSU who have contributed to the university's Imagine Tomorrow Campus Campaign. Theresa's generous gift, part of a five-year pledge to Imagine Tomorrow, and the gifts from other faculty and staff have helped the campus campaign raise more than $30,000. 

All faculty and staff who donate to Imagine Tomorrow will receive a candy jar to recognize their support of BSU's first-ever capital campaign.
Accounting students offering free tax help

BSU students who have passed Internal Revenue Service certification tests are donating their time for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and providing free income tax return help for eligible area residents.

The students offer free tax help every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 3-6 p.m. through April 10.

Sustainability Office to research city's demand for renewable energy financing

BSU's Sustainability Office and the Bemidji-based Headwaters Regional Development Commission have won a $3,000 grant from the Minnesota Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERT) to determine demand for renewable energy and energy efficiency financing in Bemidji.

Biology students present undergrad research at state capitol

Three BSU biology and aquatic biology majors presented results of their undergraduate research during the first Minnesota Undergraduate Scholars presentation at the Minnesota state capitol building in St. Paul.

The academic showcase, held in conjunction with the opening of the 2014 legislative season on Feb. 26, highlighted work from students in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system and provided an opportunity to share the results of their scholarly activity with legislators and other government officials.

Art & Design students honored

In recognition of their outstanding work in Bemidji State's art and design program, one student has won a five-week paid internship that will include three weeks in France, while another has won an all-expenses paid trip to a professional trade show in Las Vegas.

Criminal justice majors honored by Minnesota Sheriffs' Association

Three BSU criminal justice majors are among this year’s group of 13 winners of Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association scholarships, awarded to students who plan to become Minnesota peace officers after graduation.

Headwaters Film Festival student submission informationStudent submissions open for Headwaters Film Festival

The Headwaters Film Festival is accepting student entries for a film competition with cash prizes up to $500. The student competition also has a $250 prize and a pair of $125 prizes. Submissions will be accepted until March 15. Submissions must be under 10 minutes in length.

The festival, set for April 11-12 in Bangsberg Hall, celebrates the people, cultures and voices of northern Minnesota. This year's feature presentations include "Twilight on the Mississippi" and "Doomtree: Team the Best Team."

Beaver Athletics Update
BSU hosting WCHA Final Five at Sanford Center, March 7-8

The top four teams in the final Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season standings -- Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Minnesota-Duluth -- will compete for the WCHA's automatic berth into the 2014 Women's Ice Hockey Championships right here in Bemidji. Semifinal games begin at 4 p.m. March 7, with the WCHA Championship set for 7 p.m. on March 8. Single-session tickets are available starting at $9, and tournament passes begin at only $20.
