A Glimpse at our History: This area was initially settled by the Mi’Kmaq who called this area Penook which meant “fording place,” because of its location at the bend in the Cornwallis River, a natural crossing point between Horton (Wolfville area) and Cornwallis (Sheffield Mills area) townships. It was really one of the only places where the river could be crossed at low tide. Penook also means Pineo’s Place and refers to Peter Pineo, a New England Planter who came to the area in 1764. It was a Mi’Kmaq name applied to a white man’s village.

The Town of Kentville has commissioned Griffin Transportation Group to conduct a traffic study for the future development of Park Street. Griffin will look at the possibility of building on several large pieces of vacant land, as well as upgrades to the street.
The Winter Parking Ban is still on until April 15th.

Fundraiser for Valley Regional Hospital: The Valley Regional Hospital Foundation is hosting the fourth annual Gala,
Under the Tuscan Moon, offering guests a four course meal, paired with local wines, prepared by three great Valley chefs. The gala, supporting the purchase of fetal monitors for Maternal and Child at Valley Regional Hospital, will take place at the Louis Millet Community Centre, New Minas, beginning at 6:00 PM on April 12th. Tickets must be pre-booked, by March 31
st, by calling 678-5414 and are priced at $125 with a $50 receipt.
The
Kentville Baptist Church has started a weekly Sports Night on Thursdays between 7 and 9 pm. It will be held the hall/gym at Kentville Baptist. Activities include floor hockey, badminton, basketball, volleyball, etc. The theme is simply fair play, fellowship, and fun. This is geared towards youth aged 12+. Parents can feel free to leave their children at the program (and do not need to stay).

Open Arms in Kentville! With 530 walkers, 64 teams, over 200 volunteers , more than $79,000 was raised for the second annual Annapolis Valley Coldest Night of the Year. All funds will go towards Open Arms to support the hungry, the hurting and homeless.

Equilibrium Engineering, has sold half the company to an international engineering outfit based in
Quebec. The deal includes guaranteed subcontracting work for Equilibrium and should allow it to pursue more diversified business opportunities locally.

The fifth annual Annapolis Valley Events and Sport Tourism Association awards Feb. 28 saw the
Kentville Gorge awarded as the Venue of the Year! "This popular mountain biking, walking and hiking facility is located in Kentville. First developed in the 1930s, the venue has become a popular destination in all seasons, especially since the construction of a bike skills park. It regularly plays host to mountain bike competitions, group rides and clinics and well as hosting hundreds of hikers, walkers and snowshoers."

Great changes happening with the Kentville Recreation Department! Kings County native
Rachel Bedingfield is Kentville’s new parks and recreation director.
Bedingfield is responsible for the overall supervision of facilities, programs, parks, green spaces and trails. She graduated from recreation management at Acadia University and started her new position in February. READ MORE

On helmets: We don't have an official helmet policy here. However, every child should be wearing a helmet, that goes without saying. Adults are free to wear one or not.
KCA School News
Safe Arrival Program - KCA has a safe arrival program. This means that every morning, a parent volunteer goes to the school, and after morning attendance, phones every family that has a child with an unexplained absense from school that day. This is to make sure every child gets to school safely. If you know your child will be absent, or is sick, it is so important to phone the KCA Safe Arrival Line and leave a voice mail message: 690-3852.
