Rhody Represents at the National Bike Summit
Every March, bike advocates from across the nation converge on Washington D.C. for the League of American Bicyclists' three-day Bike Summit. Starting with the National Women's Cycling Forum, the second day is the League's National Bike Summit, and the third day is Lobby Day - when cycling advocates visit Congress. Our Rhode Island envoys met with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Representative David Cicilline, Representative Jim Langevin, and Steve Keenan, Senior Advisor to Senator Jack Reed. (Senator Reed was busy at the time with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.) We brought information on three new initiatives to our meetings:
- the Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Act
- the New Opportunities for Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Act
- the federal Safe Streets Act

We will also hear about RI Bike's initiative to make changes to existing laws and police procedure on crash investigations involving distracted driving.
Note: This meeting will replace our monthly Community Meeting, so there will be NO MEETING on Tuesday 3/11.

Bike Flick Night at the Jane Pickens Theater
Rising From Ashes tells the story of two worlds colliding when cycling legend Jock Boyer helps a group of struggling genocide survivors pursue their dream of a national bike team. Thanks to our friends at the Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center for screening this acclaimed and inspiring film! A portion of the ticket price will be donated to Bike Newport. Brave the cold and ride to the JPT! Follow the Bike Parking sign to the bike rack crafted from an antique gate on the side of the JPT.
Join us for the best winter party in town!
The 3rd fabulous annual Bike Newport Night will be on Wednesday, March 19th, 6:00-9:00 pm at the Midtown Oyster Bar. Rad entertainment by Pier Jump and Los Duderinos with the help of Common Fence Music! Delicious appetizers provided by Midtown! Feel the burn with RIBike's Velosprint Racing! A slew of fun raffles and a super silent auction.
The best part? Every penny raised will fund portable, high capacity BIKE RACKS – you know Newport needs them! We intend to raise enough money to support up to 1,000 bikes at events citywide.
