Welcome to Jim Balakshin

Did you know that The Attic Thrift Store has raised over half a million dollars for Gordon Neighbourhood House programs and initiatives since it first opened? Originating as clothing rack in the lobby in the mid-90s, The Attic has evolved into a special place for building community, meeting neighbours, and finding unique items.

Jim is excited to join the team of dedicated volunteers who have made The Attic such a success. Since moving to the West End 5 years ago, Jim has always admired the neighbourhood house model. He is very happy to be a part of the team, and has already noticed that he is becoming a more engaged member of the community since he started working here in mid-January. "Everyday when I walk the five blocks to Gordon Neighbourhood House from home, I am reminded of what a unique and special neighbourhood this is."

One of his favorite parts about working at Gordon Neighbourhood House is the great people, "The volunteer team is amazing, the customers are friendly, and the House staff have all been extremely welcoming." This year at The Attic Jim and the team have some big goals. "Our main goal is to work to increase revenue by 30%. This will be a challenge, but we are confident we can reach it." He is eager to raise awareness for The Attic Thrift Store in the community as a resource for people to donate items, as well as a place to find that special item.

Please join us in welcoming Jim to the team. If you're interested in volunteering or getting involved you can contact Jim at Jim@gordonhouse.org.

GNH Welcomes Chef Peter Nguyen

Please join us in welcoming Peter Nguyen to the GNH family. Peter started in the role of Chef at the beginning of January, a job which entails oversight for the food services program.

One of the things that Peter enjoys about working at Gordon Neighbourhood House is his interaction with the volunteers who help out with the community lunches. Peter loves hearing the stories of the volunteers, many of whom are not originally from Canada or are here on work or study visas. Outside of work Peter finds pleasure in the process of going to food markets, finding fresh produce, foraging and getting recipe ideas. Peter transfers this inspiration from his trips to local markets into delicious meals for friends and family. He is a big fan of Italian cuisine and makes his own pasta (when he can find the time). Given Peter’s passion for food, in the months ahead you can expect great nutritious and delicious food.

Andrew Christie has transitioned into the new role of Community Food Advocate. He has already started planning for some exciting new projects and initiatives.

Welcome to our New Friends and Neighbours: The Pride in Art Society

Pride in Art, presenters of the Queer Arts Festival are pleased to be co-located at Gordon Neighbourhood House. We are excited that our office is in an accessible location and for an opportunity to deepen our involvement in arts in the West End.

Pride in Art promotes the production, exhibition, visibility, and appreciation of queer art and artists, creating opportunities for dialogue among artists from different disciplines. PiA fosters inclusion, equality and a strong political voice for queer communities, including historical contributions.

Pride In Art began in 1998 as a collective of queer visual artists mounting a community art exhibition. In its early years, Pride in Art focused primarily on the visual arts, occasionally presenting performing arts within the exhibition space. In 2006, the festival expanded into other disciplines and art forms. Re-branded in 2010, the Queer Arts Festival is an annual artist-run showcase of queer arts, culture and history celebrating the unique creative expressions of visual and performing artists who identify as part of queer communities. Queer Arts Festival features a curated visual arts show, a community art show, and 3 dynamic weeks of cutting-edge performances and workshops from all artistic disciplines, including music, dance, theatre, literary and media arts.

The staff and volunteers of Pride in Art wish to extend our gratitude to Paul Taylor & the rest of the Gordon Neighbourhood House team for a very warm welcome and a truly inviting space to call home.

Thank you Ana Maria Bustamante!

As you may have heard the funding that Gordon Neighbourhood House (and other Lower Mainland Neighbourhood Houses) had been receiving from the Provincial Government for the Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods (BWIN) project is coming to an end as of March 31, 2014. As a result, Gordon Neighbourhood House will be saying goodbye to the incredibly dedicated and talented Ana Maria Bustamante. As you know, she is a tireless and well respected community developer and a great friend to many in the West End and beyond. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye, but anyone who knows her knows that community is what she lives and breathes and that she will continue to be be a vocal community advocate.

We would like to invite you to join us at an Open House Reception/Drop-in honouring Ana Maria's amazing contribution to the West End community. The event will be held on Friday March 7, 2014 at 12:30pm-2pm at Gordon Neighbourhood House.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Join us for our monthly Collective Kitchen:

Open to all, the collective kitchen runs on the last Saturday of each month, from 10:30 am - 2:30 pm. See for the next one on March 29, 2014.

Bring $5 and a reusable container, as there often leftovers to take home. Come out and meet your neighbours, make new friends and share a delicious meal.

Out of School Care @ GNH

Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Out of School Care (OSC) program is a licensed program for children age 5 – 10, attending Lord Roberts and Lord Roberts Annex.  OSC takes place Mondaythrough Friday from 3 – 6 pm. We promote healthy child development, positive interactions and community involvement by engaging our participants in creative and stimulating activities each day.

As part of our weekly routine, the staff and children explore various locations across the city, including: The Central Library, Capilano Salmon Hatchery and Stanley Park. In addition, we encourage our participants to become involved with various community organizations, by way of creating and then donating their arts & crafts. The experienced and dedicated OSC staff strive to offer a safe and inclusive environment, allowing each child to develop their individuality and uniqueness.

For details or to register contact Isabel Ashton at isabel@gordonhouse.org or call us at 604-683-2554 ext 204.
