Last week I attended the award ceremony for the 2014 German Bridge Award in Dresden. Six bridges were nominated in two categories. All the nominees were of course great examples of good German engineering and bridge design. However, there could only be one winner in each category. You'll find them in this newsletter!

French engineering also has an historic milestone this month as the Eiffel Tower in Paris turns 125 years on March 31st. If you want to visit the tower next time you're in Paris, get a reservation online or go up on foot because the wait for the elevator going up is very, very long...

Winners of the 2014 German Bridge Award

Road & Rail Bridges

GÃ¤nsebach Viaduct, Thuringia

This 1 km long viaduct will serve a high-speed rail line between Erfurt and Leipzig. Its very thin deck could only be achieved by using an integral design with a combination of slender columns and slab-like piers. Designed by JÃ¶rg Schlaich.

Cycle & Pedestrian Bridges

ERBA Footbridge, Bamberg

Built originally as an underspanned, single-span temporary bridge this bridge was then re-assembled at a different site (and final location) for a garden exhibit with a different structural system. Designed by Johann Grad and Matthias Dietz.

Eiffel Tower - 125 Years Old This Month!

Affectionately called the "Iron Lady", this Parisian landmark was officially opened by Gustave Eiffel on 31st March 1889. With a record-breaking 300 meters, it was the tallest structure built by man ever and by far at the time. Of course Eiffel didn't design or build the tower on his own. In fact, the original design concept was by Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, two engineers in this firm. They only managed to convince Eiffel to go forward with the project after they also involved Stephen Sauvestre, an architect in the firm. Only then did Eiffel get involved in the design of this landmark. Who could image Paris today without it?
