Message from the President

As spring approaches (it is coming, right?!), it brings with it thoughts of growth and new beginnings. If there is one thing that is noteworthy about Foundation46 this season, it is the incredible growth and the new beginnings that we have experienced.

Just three years ago, Foundation46 was held together by four dedicated members. The idea of active and supportive committees was merely a dream, but that dream has finally been realized. Today, Foundation46 is made up of eight active committees in addition to its board of directors. Those committees propel forward given the dedication and commitment of twenty-nine volunteer members of the D46 community. Our activities are guided by the invaluable input of the D46 teachers who volunteer their time as our building liaisons. Destination Imagination would not be possible without the countless parent volunteers who manage teams and who support the program by volunteering time at tournaments.

I would like to extend sincere thanks to ALL our volunteers who understand the value of an educational experience that takes children above and beyond the core curriculum. Thank you for your time, commitment, and your extraordinary talents! As you read through this edition of our newsletter, you will see just how much is happening in Foundation46. It would not be possible without each and every one of you.

- Kristin Roy Heupel

Hands-On Science Project Grant Awarded

Foundation46 is pleased to award a $1,000 grant to the second grade team at Woodview Elementary in order to enhance its Hands-On Science Program. Over 100 students will be learning about matter, space, living things, weather, and physical science with materials that will make learning more fun and interactive. Items the teachers plan to purchase with the grant include moon phase models, table top greenhouses, rock sets, barometers, and matter experiment supplies.

Foundation46 will be awarding another $4,000 in grants at the end of March. More information about Foundation46 Mini and Project Grants for D46 staff members can be found on our website.

Nine, Wine, and Fine Arts

2nd Annual Taste of Enrichment

Are you ready for spring? Then get set and GO to the 2nd Annual Taste of Enrichment event! This year you can test your skills on the links, tantalize your taste buds with wine and hors d'oeuvres, and immerse yourself in our community culture by perusing artwork made by members of our very own District 46.

Nine, Wine, and Fine Arts will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Brae Loch Golf Club in Grayslake. Gather your friends for nine holes of golf that will include fun games and fantastic prizes! Your team can then join us for our wine tasting and auction event.

Not Tiger Woods? That's okay! Join us for an evening of wine and beer tasting, music, and auction event. Live auction items include dining, golf, and summer barbeque packages, and more! Silent auction items will feature the work of local artists, teachers, and students of D46. All funds raised from the silent auction will go directly back to the schools' art programs.

After this long winter, what a great way to get outside, enjoy time with friends, and support Foundation46! More information can be found at ninewineandfinearts.com. We hope to see you for a night of Nine, Wine, and Fine Arts!

Small Card, BIG Results

2014 Foundation46 Major Saver Campaign

Foundation46 is once again offering Major Saver cards for sale through the D46 schools. Students will receive sales packets on Thursday, April 3rd, and will be selling the $15 discount cards until Wednesday, April 16th. Proceeds from the sale of Major Saver cards directly support the participating schools and the Foundation46 mission of enriching and enhancing the educational experience offered to all D46 students. Last year, Foundation46 raised over $13,200 through the sale of Major Saver cards.

Major Saver cards can be purchased online beginning April 3rd. Online sales can be credited back to a particular student, and buyers who live outside the Grayslake area can choose a discount card from a community closer to home. All cards purchased online will be mailed directly to the customer. Prizes and credit to the student will be done by the end of the campaign.

Major Saver stresses safe selling and discourages door to door campaigning. The company encourages students to sell to family members, church patrons, neighbors, or other adults the family may know, and to always make sure their parents are involved.

Please consider purchasing one or more Major Saver cards this year to help benefit Foundation
46 and the students of D46. Thank you for your continued support!

Make Every Day Earth Day and Earn Money for D46 Schools!

Foundation46 has partnered with TerraCycle to run a recycling program at Avon, Frederick, Meadowview, Prairieview, and Woodview Schools. The program has brought in $160 already this school year to support grants, enrichment scholarships, and educational projects! Please encourage your children to recycle at school and send any used items from home to be recycled as well. Accepted recyclables include:
  • juice pouches: all aluminum and plastic drink pouches
  • lunch kits: all packaging from Oscar Mayer Lunchables and other similar products
  • Elmer's glue: empty sticks, bottles, and caps from Elmer's products
  • writing utensils: anything except crayons and wooden pencils
  • GoGo squeeZ: empty GoGo squeeZ pouches

Recycling bins for each of these items can be found in school lunchrooms, outside the art room, and in classrooms. With your help, we can make this program a great success. We thank you for your participation!

Destination Imagination Regional Tournament

Three D46 Teams Advance to State Tournament

Destination Imagination (DI) is an extracurricular activity offered in D46 and other schools around the world. DI is a not-for-profit program that encourages teams to engage in a creative problem solving process, incorporating STEM, the arts, and service learning.

Congratulations to all the teams that competed at the Far North Illinois DI Regional Tournament! The tournament was held at Frederick School on March 1st. D46 had six competitive and three non-competitive (Rising Stars) teams perform at this year's tournament. Over 100 teams competed from across northeastern Illinois.

Three of D46's competitive teams qualified to advance to the state tournament to be held at Illinois State University on April 12th. Those teams include The J's, Thunder Hawks, and Paper Monkeys.

D46 Destination Imagination would not be possible without volunteer support. A huge thank you to FedEx Ground Managers Gabe Nalley and Becky Brown for serving as volunteer appraisers. Thank you to all the parent volunteers, appraisers, and Frederick School staff who gave their time over the weekend to make this year's Regional Tournament a success. A very special thank you to our volunteer parent and teacher team managers: Tina Baldwin, Dale Beutel, Amber Beutel, Krista Miller, Julie Kokkin, Paul Kokkin, Scott Landy, Lisa Lazarus, and Alarik Wright. In addition, thank you to all the local business that donated food and beverages to the Regional Tournament concessions.

Grayslake Giving Trees

Showcases the Best in Our Community

With 66 votes, Foundation46 won second place in the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum's inaugural Grayslake Giving Trees contest this December. Sixteen community organizations took part in the display, and over 700 visitors toured the exhibit during its four-week run. "Each tree really brought home the strong sense of community and spirit of caring that makes Grayslake such a wonderful place," said Historical Society's Executive Director Dave Oberg. An interactive display, the Foundation46 tree featured ornaments that invited community members to finish phrases such as "I love learning when..." and "My fondest memory of school is..." We hope to use the community's input to further our mission of enhancing the educational experience in D46. Grayslake's Chamber of Commerce and Industry collected 101 votes to receive first prize, and the American Cancer Society took third place with 56 votes. In all, nearly $600 was raised to support the Historical Society's future programs and exhibits.

Thank you for supporting Foundation46, the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum, and the greater Grayslake community!

Community and Collaborative Art

Families of Foundation46's Fine Arts Commission and the Nine, Wine, and Fine Arts Committee came together to create a one-of-a-kind collaborative mirror.  Neil Estrick, an artist based in Grayslake, supplied his time, studio, and expertise to help create tiles imprinted with items found in nature.  Children, ages 3-12, participated in cutting and designing clay tiles that will then be adhered around a mirror.  The finished masterpiece will be on display and given to the highest bidder during the silent auction at the Nine, Wine, and Fine Arts event on May 3rd.  Join us to reflect and admire this and other artwork from our community!
Employer match programs are a great way to support our mission. If your employer offers matching donations, please consider a contribution to Foundation46. We can be searched in the NFP database as “CCSD 46 Education Foundation.” We’ll happily provide additional documentation if needed. Contact us at d46foundation@gmail.com if you or your employer have questions. Thank you for your support!
