Welcome to Outerthere!

From Mar 8, The Bear Stuck Its Appalachian in Anthony's Nose Beginner Hike: Cotton socks and apocalypse trailmix #winterhike #bearsnose #appalachiantrail ...she will never forget this hike.
Hi guys!

We got a taste of spring this past weekend with a gnarly beginner hike that turned into quite the epic adventure! The ice melted in the 55-degree sun; our socks got wet; we took a detour; and before we knew it, it got dark and we hiked out under a moonlit sky. Word. That's how we do. See more below at What You Missed.

And yea, spring is next week and I found a bunch of Adventures Worth Checking Out below, plus a great beginner hike coming up in April! Yeah! Reserve your spot ASAP!

Wazzzup to the new subscribers! Feel free to tell me how'my'doin'!

See you outerthere!

P.S. What do you think about the new sections, Inspiring Adventures From Your Seat and Beta For Adventures? Hope you likes.

Adventures Worth Checking Out

  • Outerthere Rides With OvRride, our snowboard/ski partner. Yeah! I'll be co-leading weekend buses on Saturdays Mar 15, 22, and 29 to different mountains (follow @Outerthere for updates).  Don't know which mountains yet, but with one of the most epic ski/riding seasons in a decade underway, it won't matter - everywhere is awesome. No gear, no problem! All the mountains rent gear. Don't want to stay a whole weekend? No problem! OvRride trips are daytrips - in one day, out same day.  They've even got a Ladies Only program, because sometimes, girls just want to ride without the boys. Word. Book a trip and ask for Al. #dontmissthebus
  • NEW Mar 28-30 - Beneath the Sea Diving Expo at the Meadowlands Expo Center.  Basically, all things diving.  I'm going.
  • Mar 29, 30th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference, get your hands dirty, step up yo' gardening game, and make some new friends. Family friendly.
  • NEW Mar 31+, Mappy Hour by OutdoorFest. It's a get together of outdoorsy folks to plan trips together over free beers provided by Yelp. Hosted at Fjallraven. 1st event was awesome. Let me know if you're down and we'll go together to represent Outerthere! Word.
  • April 11-13 - East Coast Paddlesports & Outdoor Festival. It's an 8-hour drive to North Carolina (or a short flight), but you're guaranteed to OD on all things paddle: kayaks, canoes, stand-up boards. Carpooling, food, camping, and your entry fee won't break your bank account. And road trip!
  • May 4 - Wings for Life World Run kicks off. Runners in 40 cities start and stop at the same time. It's kinda epic.
  • May 16-18 - Dirt Rag Dirt Fest 2014, presented by Niner Bikes! It's a 4 to 5 hour drive from NYC, but you'll get to test new bikes, new tires, new trails, from a whole new festival.
  • NEW May 31 - June 8 - From the site: OutdoorFest is a ten-day, citywide festival celebrating outdoor enthusiasts in all five boroughs through community led events.  I went last year (it was called OutdoorRise) and it's for real.
  • NEW June 18 - Aug 29, Whale and dolphin watching off the coast of Rockaway Beach in Queens! Easiest decision on how to spend $20 bucks you'll make this summer.

What You Missed

  • Feb 27, I went ice climbing in the Gunks. The above pic is from my instagram: "Down. ...afterwards, we were told it was 11-degrees Fahrenheit in the shade and 12 in the sun. It was so cold, my phone died. Even my car battery died. And we were told the Oscars were Sunday. And we were told a major snowstorm was coming. In the end, this is my philosophy: which would I rather be doing, doing stuff or telling stuff to people doing stuff? I think you know what I'd rather be doing #iceclimbing #rapelling #gunks #catskills". See more on my instagram.
  • Mar 8, The Bear Stuck Its Appalachian in Anthony's Nose Beginner Hike, It started out like any other hike. Full of sun, excitement and promise. The temperature was a warm 40-degrees Fahrenheit and getting warmer. The trail was going to be easy and familiar. But what followed turned out to be one of the most epic hikes we've ever done!  See the album. Click on the pic above to see the insta.

Inspiring Adventures From Your Seat

Cold ain't so bad. You can actually surf in the arctic. [1:42]

Or hike. It's 20-below in the sun on the Arctic Circle Trail. Why not? [13:52]

Winter is more colorful than you think. Especially when you freeski with these guys. [1:41]

OK, enough with the cold already. How about some flying? A few feet off ground. Without a plane. [8:23]

But flying in planes is nice, too. Especially when thousands of flights over Europe are visualized from actual flight data. [1:59]

Beta For Adventures*

Get a mutt. Name him Max.

Then train Max how to hike.

Then train Max to climb.

Then train Max to stand up paddle board.

Now, go out on epic adventures and make your human friends jealous.

*In this context, Beta means details and other relevant info about routes and trails for climbers or hikers, not that it's in a pre-launch phase.
