President's Message

The past month has been busy for NCNC members and their dogs. Near the end of February, several traveled south for the NCSD Regional Specialty, followed by two days of shows (Silver Bay KC). NCNC dogs were very successful. At the Specialty on Friday, Dexter (Joyce Taylor) won BISS, George (Casler/Anderson/Jackson/Latchaw) went select, and Margaret (Todd and Debbie Bridge) got an AOM. Both Saturday and Sunday, George took Best of Breed, and Margaret went Best Opposite. Dexter took a Select on Saturday. A dog that Cherrie Brown co-owns, Aukai “Keep the Stoke,” got an AOM Friday and went Select on Sunday. Congratulations!

March was a busy month for draft work. We started with a successful carting seminar in Gilroy, which made up for the rained-out Antioch seminar. Thank you, Pam Rubio, for graciously providing your facilities and plenty of good food. Lori Littleford, Laura Gallagher and I were the instructors. After a morning seminar followed by lunch, about five of us took our dogs and carts to Christmas Hill Park for some practice at the test site before the impending draft test.

Despite warm weather (in the 80’s), the draft test in Gilroy on March 16 was very successful. Linda Maggy assembled and led a well-oiled test committee machine. The judges and stewards kept things moving efficiently all day, finishing the freight haul in the early afternoon before the temperature peaked. Three of the eight entries qualified, and several others were oh-so-close (e.g. didn’t come on the recall, or moved on a stay, or encountered a problem late on the freight haul). Congratulations to the qualifiers: Carol Chew with Bonnie (new DD); Cherrie Brown with Ramble (DD2 re-qualifier); and my own team of Ready (new TDD) and his mother Rose (TDD1 re-qualifier).

As I write these words, I am looking forward to four days of shows at Vallejo. With a large conformation entry, there should be majors both ways each day! There are also NCNC members entered in obedience. And, some of our members will be traveling soon to the NCA National Specialty in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Good luck to everyone!

Don’t forget the upcoming NCNC picnic and club meeting at the San Leandro Marina Park on April 26. The new location sounds wonderful. If you haven’t already registered for the picnic, please do so. (See the website.) The event will also include an NH&R raffle, so bring your donation items and cash for tickets. And soon, the water training season begins. We have much to look forward to!

~ John Pearson, NCNC President

Draft test qualifiers: Judge Gaby Cohen, Carol Chew with Bonnie, John Pearson with Ready and Rose, Cherrie Brown with Ramble, and judge Karrie Cook.
See more photos from the draft test here (thanks to Merle Maggy for taking these great shots!).

Newfoundland
Health and Rescue

Remember: NCNC Picnic and the Annual NH&R Raffle is Coming!

The annual NCNC picnic is coming on April 26, and this is the time for a major fund raiser for Rescue – the NH&R Raffle.  Sample items so far include Newfoundland books, some dog beds, a few toys and treats, and a nice framed picture.  As you “spring clean”, think of things that might be of interest to other NCNC members and consider donating them to the raffle.  Contact June Gibson (714-292-8461, jdgibson2525@yahoo.com) or Hazel Jacoby (510-582-9027, jhbar@comcast.net) before the picnic or bring them to the picnic.  (Donations are tax deductible!)  We thank you!

Dogs in Rescue

Here is a status of the dogs currently in rescue:

  • Bryce – Recovering from one TPLO, may need another.
  • Bella – A 1 1/2 year old black female.  Bella has been vet-checked and adopted.

If you have an interest in adopting a wonderful dog from rescue, please follow the procedure on our website newfhealthandrescue.org and send your application to Beth Mirsky. If you have adopted from us before, let Beth know that you are ready for another dog as your application should still be on file. Thank you for your support.

H&R Donations

We would like to thank and acknowledge the following for their donations:
  • Samantha Westgate
  • Julie Gainsley, in honor of Kirby

Spring Draft Test
Christmas Hill Park, Gilroy CA, March 16, 2014
Cherrie Brown, reporting

Because of the early date of the National Specialty this year, we moved our test date up a few weeks. We had eight entries, two of them teams, for our judges Karrie Cook from Southern California and Gaby Cohen from Northern California. Most of the entries made it through the basic control and harnessing and hitching exercises without mishap before moving on to the maneuvering course. The course had two full circles around trees at different parts of the course (instead of the more common figure-8) and used the trees and picnic tables for other portions, making it an interesting course. The freight haul headed to the more populous part of the park after traversing the upper level of an outdoor amphitheater. After looping though the lower part of the park, we went down a wheelchair ramp with two 90 degree turns before passing the starting area and taking a trail along a sadly dry creek. We circled around a tree on the hillside before returning to the finish. By the time of the freight haul the temperature was in the upper 80’s necessitating extra water stops along the way.

One team and two individual entries completed all the exercises successfully. This was the first draft title for Carol Chew with Bonnie, whereas John Pearson with the mother-son team of Rose and Ready and Cherrie Brown with Ramble were experienced competitors. There were three heartbreakers failing just a single exercise. Isaak zoned out on the recall in basic control. Teagan failed the three-minute out of sight stay during the freight load exercise after an impressively smooth maneuvering course, and Austin flipped over his cart at the bottom of the wheelchair ramp.

It takes a village to put on a successful draft test. Ours was chaired by Linda Maggy who assembled a competent team of helpers, although she also took responsibility for judges’ hospitality, trophies and participants’ gifts. Gina Bonnell selected the judges’ gifts. Our secretary was Kathy Bracisco. Pam Rubio secured the lovely site and coordinated the pre-test dinner. John Bonnell and his grounds and set-up team used flashlights to get the maneuvering course set up in time for the pre-test walk-through. Merle Maggy was our photographer. Dawn Druge and Kathy Bracisco provided the morning hospitality. Lunch prepared by Linda Maggy Amy Ryan and Kathy Sayre consisted of refreshing salads, just right for the warm day. Chief steward John Pearson recruited a competent crew of stewards consisting of Lynne Baker, Colleen Cahill, Rick Humphreys, Elisa Morozumi, Jamie Myers, Caitlin Patton, Tom Pulchny, Cathy Sayre and Lori Littleford. We were all grateful for the good food, good company and good time. All of us who were entered sincerely appreciate all the people who came out to make this event a success.
