Opening Reception of Illustrating Anarchy and Revolution

Illustrating Anarchy and Revolution,  the inaugural exhibition of the 2014 season opened in conjunction with The University of Texas at Austin’s academic conference "Illustrating Revolution and Anarchy: Mexican Legacies of Global Change.” Internationally-renowned academic scholars, exhibiting artists, and university students filled the galleries.

The reception’s special performance by Mexican cabaret artist,
Astrid Hadad, provided a stunning production, replete with elaborate costumery, robust vocalizations and provocative dance. Guests also enjoyed music by Raul Orduña y Los Trovadores and catering by Cafe Rebelde.

As the falling lights signaled the end to a night well lived, Mexic-Arte Museum enjoyed the company of new members, renewed members, and the memories of this special event. Thankfully, we also captured an album of photos at the event so that you can relive your experience at Mexic-Arte Museum, which can be found
here.

Illustrating Anarchy and Revolution evolved from a partnership between the La Casa de El Hijo del Ahuizote Museum and The University of Texas at Austin's Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) academic conference "Illustrating Anarchy and Revolution: Mexican Legacies of Global Change." This survey exhibition extends the conference's thematic analysis of Mexico's Flores Magón brothers' anarchist legacies and presents associated sociopolitical art and international ephemera referencing social, agrarian, and labor movements of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Changarrito

"Changarrito" is an art vending cart designed as an alternative to the official gallery selection presented by the Mexican cultural authorities conceptualized by artist, Maximo Gonzalez. There are multiple Changarrito carts circulating throughout the world-all with the same objective of promoting original artwork to the general public. As a live project, Changarrito is faithful to its original informal spirit and has evolved to become a forum for public programs, special curatorial projects, and individual and collective exhibitions. Local Austin artist, April Garcia was our January Changarrito artist-in-residence, and in February visiting artist Esteban del Valle was our February Changarrito artist-in-residence.

January Changarrito Artist-In-Residence:

April Garcia

Jan 11-12 & Jan 18-19 2014

April Garcia was born in sunny San Benito in south Texas. She was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley before moving to the capital city. Since living in Austin she enjoys being a part of the creative community and has studied media that include sculpture, and printmaking. She finds that Yayoi Kusama, Louise Bourgeois and Claes Oldenburg inspire her fabric art. Frequently you can find her behind her sewing machine creating forms inspired by natural organic shapes.

Education

Screen It! in the Schools

Thanks to the Community Youth Development program funded by the City of Austin, the Screen It! program has seen a dramatic increase in student participation. In January 2014, we expanded to include classes at Ojeda Junior High School, and continue our ongoing classes at Akins High School and Widen Elementary. A new collaboration with Akins’ Arts and Humanities Academy gives students the opportunity to express themselves through the creation of a uniquely personal design. In every consecutive class, students print a new color onto their t-shirt or tote-bag, culminating in a finished product that they can take home and a stencil that inspired students can use to continue printing on their own. Students develop problem solving skills through the practice of new artistic techniques, creating their own wearable art. By illustrating their opinions and interests, students are finding a new way to respond to the world around them. Before the ink is even dry, students parade around the classroom showing their t-shirts off to their peers. We expect the program to grow and grow!

New Classes at Ojeda Junior High School

The Education Department is delighted to have been working with over 250 students at Ojeda Junior High School! Students viewed images of political printmakers, historical, and contemporary, including works by Serie Project Artist, Michael Menchaca. Students were given the opportunity to design and print their own two-color shirts. We were happy to have a few students go the extra mile to create three and even four color designs! Currently, we are working with the students in Ojeda's special Life Skills Inclusion Program, we have discovered that many of these students with disabilities rarely have the opportunity to create art. We are so grateful to be able to make an impact in their lives, and believe that all children should have the chance to receive Art Education.

New in the Museum Store

Whether you’re bringing down establishments or joining a picket line, you wouldn’t want to get caught by the riot police, or much less the fashion police without one of our bandanas.  They are hand pulled right here at Mexic-Arte Museum and come in three different eye catching colors: cyan, yellow and magenta. The bandanas are peppered with the Illustrating Anarchy and Revolution logo. So allow your rebel side to support our Screen It program and remember Viva La Revolucion!

Thank you sponsors!
