Hello and welcome to Spring ...

Well, it's almost March so let's keep our fingers crossed! This month we're inviting professionals working with families, and parents, to Brush Up on your skills by taking a One Family training course for professional development, to enhance your parenting skills, or to move back into education or employment. We also invite you to Step Out with us by taking part in the Flora Women's Mini Marathon with Team One Family. Read on for a new look at training, our response to the Heads of the Children and Family Relationships Bill 2014 and plans for this year's Family Day Festival. We also share the results of last month's survey on the Single Person Child Carer Tax Credit and you can take this month's on Income Disregards.

The Bill

We welcomed the publication of the Heads of the Children & Family Relationships Bill 2014 on 30th January by Minister Alan Shatter. As an organisation that has campaigned for over 40 years for legal recognition and support for the wide diversity of families that children live in, we believe this Bill is a good first step that is long overdue. We do have some concerns about how aspects of the Bill can really be implemented given the serious resource restrictions that exist, and the lack of consistency and specialist knowledge that can characterise some family law proceedings and the requirement to hear children’s voices. Read our response here and follow the conversation on Twitter @1FamilyIreland #CFRB.

Professionals

Our Spring 2014 series of training courses for professionals working with families started this week. Our three-day flag ship programme Family Communications: Coping with Family Life and Communication with Teenagers is currently running in Galway with upcoming Family Communications courses booking now for Dublin (3rd-5th March) and Mullingar (26th-28th March). Additional upcoming training will be announced shortly for Dublin and Clare in April. This programme is accredited meaning that professionals can qualify to facilitate it on completion, in one-to-one or group sessions, utilising our 40+ years of experience. Click here for details on this and our other courses for professionals.

Parents

Courses for parents start over the next couple of weeks, in two key areas: parenting skills, and back to work and education. Our Positive Parenting and Family Communications courses cover topics from exploring the needs of children and reasons why they misbehave to learning ways to resolve conflict and negotiate. Just€30 for 6 classes over 6 weeks, you can book or learn more here. We're also looking forward to welcoming our New Futures participants next week. This free, 20 week programme offers distinctive career development with wrap-around supports for people parenting alone. Read more about this and our other welfare to work programmes here.

Survey

Our Budget 2015 Panel members - ten lone parents and/or parents sharing parenting who are collaborating with us on our budget submission - met for the first time this week. It was great to welcome them to Cherish House and discuss topics including housing, childcare and the importance of after school care, tax credits, in work incentives and educational supports for people parenting alone. You can be part of it too by taking our anonymous monthly survey. This month's survey is on Income Disregards. You can take it by clicking here now. Last month you gave us your views on the Single Person Child Carer Tax Credit. Read the results here

Get Involved

Step Out with One Family for the Flora Women's Mini Marathon! You'll receive a sponsorship pack including a t-shirt. Cherish House, which is on the route, will be open on the day (2nd June) so you'll have somewhere to meet friends, store bags, get changed and enjoy a cuppa. Registration is open now and you can find details here. We're also busy organising the 4th annual Family Day Festival which was attended by 10,000 people last year and we need volunteers from stewards and crew, to jugglers and face painters. There are fantastic opportunities for companies to get involved through sponsorship or CSR too. Read more about Family Day here and mark your diaries for 18th May!
If you missed the Today FM documentary Cherish All The Children about our establishment in 1972, featuring interviews with our brave founders, our first President Mary Robinson and many more,
you can listen here.
