Dear supporter of Gareth Porter's fine book--

Gareth Porter, portraitFresh from his recent great book-launch events in New York City and Washington, DC, Gareth Porter will be bringing the discussion of his timely new book, Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare, to the Boston area March 26-27-- and, since you were a generous backer of the whole project to get the book written, I wanted you to be one of the first to know.

We have one big anchor event scheduled for him so far. It's being organized by Massachusetts Peace Action and the Peace and Economic Security Program of AFSC; and it'll be held March 27, at 7:00 pm, at the Friends Meeting of Cambridge, 5 Longfellow Park, Cambridge. You can RSVP for it here. (Also, use that FB page to share news of the event with your friends.)

We are also actively discussing a number of other events while Gareth is in the Beantown area-- details to follow.

We know that at the massive annual meeting of AIPAC that's due to open on Sunday, 13,000 or more of the organization's most dedicated activists will be trying to re-energize their campaign for "crippling" new sanctions against Iran-- the same ones that Pres. Obama said would lead only to the failure of the current negotiations and set us back on a path to war.

Manuf. Crisis, cover artDuring his very timely visit to the Boston area, Gareth Porter will share some of the key findings from Manufactured Crisis that clearly show how the accusations that AIPAC relies on in its warmongering have been fabricated, exaggerated, misunderstood, and systematically misportrayed to the public for more than two decades now.

Gareth provides crucial evidence that everyone in the antiwar movement needs to know and understand if we are to give effective support to the negotiations with Iran. The material he presents is detailed and fact-based-- but he presents it really clearly, both in his fabulous book and in his public presentations. You can see a video from one of his NYC presentations here. But obviously, coming to see him in person and putting your own questions to him will be much more informative and interesting than watching a video!

I'm writing now to ask if you, or organizations or people you work with, can do any of the following:
  1. Can you help us get the word out about the great Cambridge Friends Meeting event that our MA-based colleagues have already scheduled?
  2. Might you be able, even with the short lead time available, to organize any additional gatherings for Gareth, during the period between March 26th and, say, March 30th?
  3. Could you help us with media outreach, logistics, or anything else during Gareth's time in Boston?
If you can help in any of these ways, please let me know, asap!

Manufactured Crisis has gotten off to a great start. It clearly has the potential to make a huge difference to the way Americans understand and think about our relationship with Iran. In one of the early reviews it received, Peter Jenkins, formerly the UK's ambassador to the IAEA in Vienna, wrote:
One inference... from Manufactured Crisis looks inescapable. There has never been conclusive evidence that Iran’s Islamic leaders want to have or to use nuclear weapons. All talk of an “Iranian nuclear threat” is therefore premature. Consequently, the draconian measures implemented by the US and its allies to avert that threat are unreasonable and unwarranted.
Gareth and I will both be extremely grateful for anything you can do to make his time in the Boston/Cambridge area a huge success!

Thanks so much for all the help you've given Gareth's book-writing project so far, and warmest wishes to you for a great weekend--
